Finally FTTP has arrived for me

@bmc Yes that is correct, bottom floor, my front door has a communal cupboard in front of it, and from there to the MS where it is, is a total of 5m, give or take 1m for bends, and yes there is a socket near the MS that is where the HUB2 is right now (ADSL sadly right now).

Why ethernet? I have a 802.11ax network chip (wifi 6) is the HUB2 not capable of sending out 500mb wifi?

EDIT: I see 420mb is max it can transmit via Wifi 5. I am getting 500mb, so hopefully it will be fine, otherwise I will just ask for the new MS to be placed elsewhere I can lay CAT6e to without being a tripping hazard.

You'll need to get used to the terminology when FTTP is installed. You won't have a Master Socket, you'll have an ONT. While ONT's can be moved after install I believe it currently costs £160 to do so.

Unfortunately you won't know until the day of install exactly how the fibre will be brought into your property so you can't do any pre work to make things easier. The installer will probably be happy to put the ONT anywhere in the room where the fibre enters but they don't drill through walls to get elsewhere.

As previously stated the router connects to the ONT by ethernet cable so can go anywhere you're happy to run cable. It's also been mentioned you can get "flat" cable to run under carpets but I have no experience of this type of cable.

Do you have an install date yet?

I was referring to the where the current MS is and mistakenly referred to the ONT as the MS . And the install date is 30th Sep. I will have the ONT and Hub2 next to each other, minimizing the need for a lengthy cat6e or similar.

Fair enough on the router.

The Hub2 is a basic router that does most people. If it doesn't cut the mustard with your WiFi then PN have always been happy for people to use their own equipment. The settings required can be found in the Help pages.

Do let us know how the install goes. It would add to our knowledge base regarding FTTP. IF you get a chance quiz the installer about other flats in the block - is there a duct up to them or will some other solution be required. Would be useful information for your neighbours if anyone jumps to FTTP after you.

I will, and for some reason I got a text not long ago saying it will be moved from the 30th to the 1st October, how nice of them to not check first, I did have something planned for that day, now I have to cancel that planned day.

But I will let people know what happens with the install etc.

So an Engineer came out and it was from a 3rd party company called Circet, 1st they didn't have a key for the communal cupboard nor can they go get the key - apparently they aren't allowed to.

2nd they can't figure out where the fibre ends currently which is in the cupboard.

So now they have put it down as a no job and have booked in someone to come look next week, while I start a new job so can't help.

The BT guy who was out before knew what to do to get the ONT in the house, yet this guy didn't, and the BT guy had a key to get in the cupboard.

So annoyed right now lol

I didn't know Circet did installs. Normally, if OR subcontract for the install, as they often do, it is either to MJ Quinn or Kelly Communications.

The Circet guy certainly had a defeatist like attitude when he arrived, he wasn't open to entertain anything, he probably lied about not being able to go get the key either, but that is speculation on my part.

Decided to go on a service that is somewhat between FTTC and FTTP, will get the same speeds'ish but more reliable. Forgot what he called it, SJEA or SLEA - totally forgot I was just annoyed and not fully listening to acronyms lol

Just wish it was BT who came out.

@TheRealDabhand  Considering the confusion earlier in this thread about how the fibre was to get to your premises, I'm not surprised it has all gone pear shaped. Everything I have read about Circet gives the feeling that they are a useless waste of space. Like @jab1 I didn't know they were able to do FTTP installations, their usual role is to check internal cabling to the router when a customer has a problem, and they aren't much good at that.☹️

You need to pester Plusnet to get a real Openreach employee on the job, they should have a better idea of what needs to be done.

Edit: From your latest post you appear to have given up on FTTP, that's not a good move. SOGEA is exactly the same as FTTC but with no Phone service and it isn't more reliable, you need FTTP for the most reliable service.

Probably SoGEA - FTTC without a phone. You will get the same speed as you do now -or should, we have seen instances of speed 'wobbles' when the phone element has been removed.

@RealAleMadrid Yeah I think you may be right, he talked about not being able to drill holes into a wall saying the wall would come off with it, the wall is pretty much solid brick around the Cupboard. I kept pushing that the BT guy before looked at the house etc and had an idea of what will be done and he was inside the Cupboard to see what was what.
EDIT: For now I can't keep pushing FTTP right now as I start a new job working from home, so I can't take any time off early stages I would be sacked lol, so SoGEA is the lesser of two evils.

@jab1 Yeah that is it, seems to be the better choice for now, with my job WFH starting on the 7th I can try again in the future and get a date/time that I can get a day off for, but it would have been bad at the start of the job. What do you mean "wobble" lol?

@TheRealDabhand In theory, if you go SoGEA, you should get 'as fast as your connection will support' (up to 80Mb/s), but there have been reports of people losing speed on the transfer. It shouldn't happen, but does, and it can be a pain getting it sorted - hopefully it doesn't happen to you.
