Hi,
I had the BT engineers over on 13/11/25 and they installed the new Openreach Full Fibre modem and then connected an Ethernet cable from the modem to my Hub 2 router. I normally get download speeds of around 90 Mbps when I turn my laptop on, but I need to restart the laptop and after that I get speeds of around 145 Mbps, does anyone know why it happens and if it can be sorted so I get speeds of around 145 Mbps without needing to restart all the time? When I connect my mobile phone to the Wi-Fi I always get speeds of around 145 Mbps.
Thank you
Fixed! Go to the fix.

90Mb/s sounds like the laptop isn't correctly negotiating a gigabit ethernet connection with the hub instead going for 100Mb/s.
The easy thing to try is a different cable as that is often the problem.
Otherwise it's looking for updated network drivers for the laptop or perhaps forcing the settings to gigabit rather than autonegotiate.
It will be the laptop rather than the Plusnet Hub but you could try a different Ethermet port on the Hub just to check.

It's not clear to me if you are connecting your laptop using a LAN port or not. It would be normal for a laptop to use a WiFi connection. If you are connect using WiFi it could be the laptop has connected using the 2.4 GHz signal rather than 5 GHz
Disconnect the WiFi signal should hopefully switch it to 5GHz, I sometimes have to do this.
If you are using a LAN connection then check the previous advice given.
The Hub two GUI >Home >My devices will detail where a device has connected.

@Mark38 assuming the laptop is running Windows, then make sure the wireless adapter is set to prefer the 5ghz band.

Also I was told by the BT engineer the cable has to be connected to the WAN Ethernet port on the Hub.

when you say Disconnect the WiFi signal do you mean to disconnect the Hub or reset it?
Abd what di you mean by Hub two GUI?
Thank you.

The Openreach ONT (modem) connects to the Hub Two WAN port which is correct, unfortunately your first post has been answered with poor advice.
As I stated it is likely your laptop is connecting to the hub on the 2.4 GHz signal that has a slower speed to the 5GHz connection.
Try turning off / on the wireless adapter to see if that resolves the issue. <- I refer to the laptop wireless interface
The Hub GUI (graphic user interface) is reached here http://192.168.1.254 when connected to your home WiFi

That is the cable from the ONT to the router. It won't work at all, otherwise.

As long as you don't have any device that needs to use the 2.4GHz WiFi from the Hub 2 router you can log in to the Hub 2 and turn the 2.4GHz WiFi off, just leaving the 5GHz signal. That's what I did and I always get 150Mbps reported via the Test website.
BTW - The Openreach ONT (Optical Network Terminal) is not a "modem". No modem is used with Full Fibre as it is not a 'Broadband' based service operating over an analogue landline network. 😎

Hi,
Thanks.
I have already turned on and off the router and reset it.
This is what I get when I go my Hub manager, is there anything you think I should change?

@Mark38 Is all your kit fairly new? What do you have which needs a Wi-Fi connection to function?

Hi,
I don't use any other devices.
So shall I'll try to turn off the 2.4GHz WiFi off, just leaving the 5GHz as attached, click save and see if I get the 145Mbps without needing to restart everytime?

"BTW - The Openreach ONT (Optical Network Terminal) is not a "modem". No modem is used with Full Fibre as it is not a 'Broadband' based service operating over an analogue landline network"
Consider how signals are translated.
Try plugging a 'router' directly into the fibres before the ONT. There will be a mismatch in the connection. There will be a mismatch in the underlying method of transmitting the data (optical to electrical conversion).
My mind says that the ONT is operating as a modem. It is converting an optical signal into an electrical signal (old style modems converted sound to electrical).
Of course, a lot of consumer grade 'routers' are not routers, but are mainly switches.
