Slow FTTP connection

I should be on an 80/20 profile.

It seems that this has recently been changed to a slower one.

When I look here

It says; Current line speed:40 Mb

When I run BT Wholesale Broadband Performance Test

I get the following; Broadband Speed Test Results
Download Speed (Mbps): 24.58
Upload Speed (Mbps): 11.11
Ping Latency(ms): 25.38

Under Further diagnostics
When I put my address in I get
No Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) services have been found at this address.
Please check the postcode or use the Telephone Number or Service ID to conduct the test.

When I put in my Broadband Circuit Service ID

First time I tried I got this

   Download speedachieved during the test was - 28.09 Mbps
   For your connection, the acceptable range of speedsis 40 Mbps-76.8 Mbps .
   Additional Information: IP Profile for your line is - 76.8 Mbps
   Upload speed achieved during the test was - 10.5Mbps
   Additional Information: Upstream Rate IP profile on your line is - 20 Mbps

After rebooting the Openreach GPON it now shows
  Test Error
  The Tap1 test was not conclusive for your broadband connection.
  However if this problem persists, raise the issue with your service provider.

Can you please investigate and correct.

That looks strange, there have been cases where some speed profile on the PlusNet side gets reset to ADSL2+ speeds for no particular reason so you get downloads of 20Mbps or so but that does not usually affect the upload so I think you need PlusNet to investigate this. I will ask a moderator to move the thread to the FTTP forum.

Hi @MKG,

I'm sorry that your speed has dropped and for any inconvenience that this is causing you.

I can see that the connection profile on your account has dropped to 40mbps but it's unclear why this has happened. I've adjusted this back to 80mbps now.

Please can you reboot your router and also reboot the Optical Network Terminator (the Openreach box that's connected to the router) and let us know if your speed is still poor after you've done this.

Rebooted GPON and Router as suggested

I now get the following BT Wholesale Broadband Performance Test resukts
   Download Speed (Mbps): 61.31
   Upload Speed (Mbps): 18.01
   Ping Latency(ms): 29.25

This is not the first time it has changed to a lower speed.

Are you running the speed test on wired or wireless?

Given you're on FTTP, you should be getting around 76 download.

Bearing in mind what @bmc said about what speeds you should expect and being connected via Ethernet not wireless when checking your speeds, try this speedtester which I saw recommended somewhere.

It works very well for me using Chrome, giving consistent, apparently reliable results.

Tested again this morning

I get the following BT Wholesale Broadband Performance Test resukts
   Download Speed (Mbps): 58.01
   Upload Speed (Mbps): 17.83
   Ping Latency(ms): 33.25

Further Diagnostics using Broadband Circuit Service ID
   Download speedachieved during the test was - 58.01 Mbps
   For your connection, the acceptable range of speedsis 40 Mbps-76.8 Mbps .
   Additional Information: IP Profile for your line is - 76.8 Mbps

   Upload speed achieved during the test was - 17.83 Mbps
   Additional Information: Upstream Rate IP profile on your line is - 20 Mbps

I also tried

   Upload Speed (Mbps): 20.87
   Ping Latency(ms): 8

and

https://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest

   Download Speed (Mbps): 73.8
   Upload Speed (Mbps): 20.9
   Ping Latency(ms): 23

Significantly different.
My conclusion is that these speedtests are not that reliable.
I used the BT Wholesale tests becuase that is the speedtest Plusnet suggest.

it's the BTW speed test that isn't accurate. I just tried it on Chrome and got 413Mbps download!

When tried on Edge it was only 74.Mbps - much better.

There is a big thread about the BTW Speedtest results being incorrect.
