FTTC - my experience

I saw that Plusnet was looking for beta testers  and put my name down here.
Dave Tomlinson phoned me - we discussed what would happen. Pros and cons.
BT turned up on time. The FTTC cabinet is 300m from my house.Previously I was running on the 21CN networks at about 18Mbps and 768kbps back.
The service was disconnected only for about 10 minutes.
BT changed the face plate and plugged in their VDSL modem. I then plugged my firewall directly into the BT (Huawei??) VDSL modem. I use Untangle ( www.untangle.com) and I reconfigured it for PPoE - put in my PlusNet and password. Hit connect.
Bingo! The service worked and has done since it was installed.
I am now connected to Plusnet at 40Mbps/10Mbps.
Using the speed tester I can download at 38.9Mbps and 8.4Mbps back.
So well done Plusnet and BT
Although downloading is a lot faster - you will see that its the remote web site that is the constraint. VoIP calls are significantly better in quality now than they used to be.

Why? You only need at most 160kbps for the highest quality codec.

As a matter of interest what is your ip profile on the BT Speedtester?

norskman - thanks for the feedback appreciated, glad it's all good
itsme - could be the latency, there's no interleaving on FTTC and the latency seems to be a touch lower on FTTC than a good ADSL line.
