sudden overnight halving of my download speed - profile issue again?

Hi,

I've had this issue before and hope it;s just the same again please.

I live close enough to the fibre cabinet that I've always had about 70Mbps down and 18Mbps up.

That is what my modem syncs at.

On the 25th June I was downloading during the night and early morning at that speed

Tonight I've just noticed that the download speed has halved along with the modem sync. A reboot made no difference and nothing has changed at my end for years.

Upload speeds are a little lower at about 17Mbps

Last time this happened Plusnet had accidentally moved me to a different profile.

Could someone check for me and see if this has happened again please

just attaching a BT Wholesale snip to show what we can receive (and did up until yesterday morning) along with the advanced performance report which hopefully shows we're just on the wrong Profile again.

Can someone from Plusnet please check for me when you have time (appreciate there are other higher priorities for now)

Your observed speeds is much down on what you should get. If not a profile problem, maybe a line fault. Is the line quiet (dial 17070 for quiet line test with a phone)?

Hi idonno,

we don't normally have a phone in use but using an old one we have for emergencies gives a very crackly line so I wonder if that's the issue?

Can you please suggest what I do now? Should I unplug the modem and see if the line is quiet? Or is it a PNet/BT thing?

Hi,

A crackly line will often ruin broadband speeds.

The crackle must be fixed by Openreach before the BB speeds can recover.

Follow the troubleshooter at: https://portal.plus.net/apps/kbdfaults

This should allow you to raise a fault with PN

Well the friendly and helpful Openreach Engineer has come out and done some work - apparently a bit of cable was wearing out.

The phone is now quiet and the modem is syncing at 60+up/19down which is a good sign.

A speedtest still shows max speeds of 24 down though.

I realise it should go up over time but wondered how long that would take or whether anyone could 'do' something to speed it up. It's not a profile issue I assume?
