Yes you can replace the router.
If you are going to buy a new one though why not go for a VSDL router and then you can ditch the Openreach modem too.
If you want to keep the Openreach modem too then you need a router that supports PPPoE, and the only real key things to do is make sure you set it up to use vlanid 101 in the settings.
https://www.plus.net/help/broadband/broadband-connection-settings/
has all the details for setting your own router up.

The plusnet hub 1 is very good for wifi signalstrength, not sure what plusnet charge to buy one for existing customers, probably free if you recontract
It is easy to use but has less advanced features of the more expensive routers,
http://www.broadbandbuyer.co.uk/store/fibre-routers/bt-infinity-routers/ Is a good link to show the price range and features.
More expensive routers don't generally make it faster but do things like SIP voice clients, vpn servers etc
If you have features needed or price range we can help narrow it down, hopefully someone @ plusnet can confirm hub1 costs, although if not in a hurry you can get new ones on eBay for £30!

Something like http://r.ebay.com/sKmpJb
It's cheap as it's locked to BT or plusnet, and pretty much eveone with BT gets their latest hub free as do new plusnet customers there isn't a good demand for them second hand. Id suggest trying a hub one as they are cheap to buy and have pretty good wifi!

It has more antennas in the router to give stronger performance, if you are a long way and lots of walls it still may not be great, but should be much better.
