Re: latency spikes every few seconds

@Les872,

Think Broadband have a quality monitor if you want to have a look at that, it will run a continuous test so the spikes are visible in graph form and it does this in the background so you don't have to trace or ping while in the middle of a game. It will likely be more reliable too.

The problem with running tracert's and ping tests to website while using the connection for time sensitive data transfer, like gaming, is the hops are going to have a higher ms than would be expected (it's similar to streaming a 4k video on Netflix and running a speedtest - the results are going to be hindered).

With regards the engineer visit, nothing is charged unless the appointment is missed (in the sense no one is able to provide access to the socket on the agreed day), the equipment that's used that is outside of Openreach's control, or something is damaged outside of their control.

I can understand your hesitation with regards any internal flat wiring, but if you have building management then it may be that Openreach can discuss with them directly, or instruct you to do so if Openreach can't have any interaction with them. If it is that wiring then changing provider to one that will use that same infrastructure is literally going to make no difference.

And here's a couple trace screenshots from yesterday while I was playing apex legends and it was lagging.

Re: latency spikes every few seconds

It may be worth setting up a ThinkBroadband Quality Monitor, because I think that's going to show us a lot more than traceroutes or pings. It's a really useful diagnostic tool.

I've booked the engineer visit for tomorrow 23-03-2019 between 1pm and 6pm, let us know how this goes.

From 31st October 2022, I no longer have a regular presence here as I’ve moved on to a new role.

Re: latency spikes every few seconds

Second time lucky! I've asked our mods to check the spam filter, it works in mysterious ways.

It may be better to embed the graph into a post. Opening the link up though apart from the redness, the way the yellow and blue is looks to show there's a lot of usage going through your connection.

Are you able to switch off all devices apart from the device you're using letting us know if you experience the spikes still?

Re: latency spikes every few seconds

I've tried embedding it but it just comes up as text, been playing apex legends since 1pm and I've turned everything else off and disabled the wireless on the hub and its running much better, the graph seems to say so too hmm.

Re: latency spikes every few seconds

Sounds like the issue may be down to other devices downloading or uploading.

It might probably be worth cancelling the appointment I've booked, let me know if you're happy with that?

I'll keep testing for a couple hours before deciding just in case its a fluke.

Re: latency spikes every few seconds

No worries, keep us posted although I'd bear in mind that the fault may go into what's called past point of no return at any point which will mean we won't be able to cancel the appointment as it'll be scheduled into an engineers workstack for tomorrow.

Re: latency spikes every few seconds

It was spiking a bit last game I played, I think I'll let the engineer come tomorrow and see what they say after they do the tests and such better to have them look at it.
