constant DNS issues tonight

this reminds me when plusnet had major server issues about 2 years ago (we had only just got an fiber upgrade).

at times ive got connection then it drops with dns issues and then suddenly sites and google spring back to life and its happening with all browsers.

I presume you are using Plusnet's DNS and not another?  Did it start working ok later or are you still having problems?

The maintenance should have been completed by now.  

Have you tried restarted your router yet?

 i wish however that when they have maintenance due to be done, that the email etc and state whats likely to happen so that we dont end up guess and filling fault reports

well i logged into the site to file one as it was happening last night  via my mobile, but as soon as i signed in it just jumped to "your fault has now been reported" and i hadnt even filed anything at that point, all i had done is sign in

I can see you have a fault already raised, but it's an older one.  Might be worth you updating on that ticket from your mobile if you can, or calling in.
