Estmiated 40mb - Actual 8.5mb
that is apparently because I am more than 1000 metres from the fibre box in my village....
BT Openreach engineer came and said that there is nothing more we can do to increase speed..
Is that it - the end of the road?

If you really are that far from the cabinet, then you're stuck. However it's a bit odd that your estimate was that far out. Do you have the new hub modem/router? I believe you can get your line stats from that. If so could you post them here? Also the results of a BT speed test and the results of the BT availability checker (remove your phone number from the text).

It depends on how much more than 1,000 metres it is
I am 800 metres (wire length) and get the following

Dear Philip,
Thank you for your email.
We are unable to comment regarding available connection speeds as this can depend on the package supplied from your Provider in addition to the existing line connected to your property.
This is the fibre enquiry team and we find out if fibre is available prior to customers choosing a service provider and placing their order.
I can confirm that fibre is available to your cabinet and your property is within the required distance for the service to work.
I am sorry that we are unable to assist you further with this enquiry as the cabinet has been enabled and fibre service is currently available.
As we can see on our system its available to the public but it is not a guaranteed speed.
Yours sincerely,
Lenitha

How much more than 1000 meters?
See here : http://www.thinkbroadband.com/guide/fibre-broadband.html
"Not everyone will receive the maximum speed as it depends on the length of your phone line to the cabinet which is providing your broadband service, but BT Openreach will guarantee that the minimum sync speed will be 15Mbps or 30Mbps. "
I think reporting a speed fault would be in order. See here first http://community.plus.net/forum/index.php/topic,143836.0.html
EDIT Just one thing - you are using a wired connection and not wifi?
