These might be helpful, ideally you want the Type 5 with a VDSL Mk 2 or 3 faceplate, do the neighbors have these?   If so that could be some of the difference.
There are 2 types of Modem I like you have the ECI which is to match my Cabinet which is also ECI, do neighbors have ECI?

Re: Why are my neighbours getting 30mbs

I have a type 2 socket, All my wires seem fine. The cabinet seems to be an ECI one.
The neighbour has a home hub 5 type B plugged into type 5 without an external modem. Other neightbour  has a type 5 socket, not sure what he`s got. He is getting 30mbs, I was there when he ran the first speedtest on the line. One thing, they have in common which I dont, They both have had BT engineers out for new sockets and had line problems. One had a string of problems before getting fibre with BT coming out at least 4 times, The other needed an engineer when they moved in, Due to a problem on the line which resorted in them getting a type 5 socket fitted years before fibre was available locally.

Re: Why are my neighbours getting 30mbs

Looks like you need Plusnet to send Openreach out to you to test your line and fit the latest master socket and filter plate and finally reset your DLM in the cabinet.
Hopefully someone here will tell you best way to get Plusnet to get OR on the case.

I only have 1 socket in my house that is currently wired in. I do have sockets upstairs but those arent wired in, just the faceplate.
Do you mean they have nothing plugged into them or they have no wires in the back connecting them to the master socket ?

Re: Why are my neighbours getting 30mbs

Given the age of the property and the type of internal socket it's very possible it has an external NTE: http://www.run-it-direct.co.uk/forum/external-nte/what-the-external-nte-means-for-you-t41.html also bottom of this page: http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/btsockets.htm
Have you got anything like the pictures in the links?

Re: Why are my neighbours getting 30mbs

@MisterW There are no wires connected at the back I can confirm this as I removed one when I moved as I wanted to plug a second phone in upstairs.
@w23 I do have an external NTE. Sticking my head out the door and having a quick look shows that all the houses on the street have one. Do you mean the yellow test plug? I havent checked, Am not sure if Im allowed to open it to look, If someone can confirm Im allowed to open it, I`ll look otherwise I`ll have to wait.

Re: Why are my neighbours getting 30mbs

I'm unsure of the implications of the external NTE, I just think I read somewhere that they **could** be problematic for broadband - maybe there's some hope that an engineer's visit could be justified and productive.

I'd agree with that.

So there were wires but they are now disconnected. Sounds like the sockets may have been wired in a 'star' configuration ( . Very possible if you have an external NTE ) as previously mentioned, and that could well be affecting your speeds. I believe for FTTC installations the external NTe should have been bypassed by the engineer and a NTE5 fitted. See this thread http://community.plus.net/forum/index.php/topic,115413.0.html/ . From what you said earlier at least one of your neighbors has an NTE5 so presumably the engineer replaced their extrenal NTE ?

No, Just never had wires behind them. I know the engineers did open the boxes outside their houses, thats all I really know.

Re: Why are my neighbours getting 30mbs

Odd, wonder why they fitted  sockets with no wires Huh
Anyway, I think you need a 'proper' BT engineer appointment ( not a contractor ) as part of the faults process to come and 'normalise' your installation, bypass the external NTE and fit an NTE5 with a VDSL faceplate.

Re: Why are my neighbours getting 30mbs

For reference,  I get around a 55-65Mb connection on Fibre while my next door neighbour gets around half that on her fibre.
Not sure why as we've never done any investigating but it can vary wildly even though we're both almost the same distance from the cabinet.

Re: Why are my neighbours getting 30mbs

Well I was told yesterday that a BT engineer would go to the cabinet today and my problem would be sorted within 24 hrs. 24 hrs later and my speedtest results

Im getting nowhere near what it was sold to me at. Even plusnet staff have quoted numbers Im just not seeing. Fibre is worse than my adsl at the moment.  Can someone from Plusnet get back to me about this. I have been reporting faults on my line for a while now, and you keep telling me its fine.

Nowhere near the speed you keep quoting.

Re: Why are my neighbours getting 30mbs

Id like to see the engineers report from yesterday. As you can clearly see Im getting nowhere near the speeds you quoted.
Sold to me at 30 Mbs, Changed to 22 mbs 8 hours after fitting it. Now im getting anything between 8 and 16 mbs, and your telling me this is normal. NO IT ISNT. My old adsl line was faster. Somehow you`ve upgraded me to fibre and im getting slower speeds. Had another neighbour confirm they are receiving 39Mbs on there line with another cpmpany. So why is Plusnet so much slower than all other providers. Can you please check when my cooling off period ended?  I`ve had this service a week, and its a joke. the line crackles like no tomorrow and my speed drops off, I`ve reported for months there is a fault on the line. Are you going to get this fixed?

Until this is resolved you're going to get nowhere.  Looking back at this thread this seems to be the first time you've mentioned an underlying line fault.
