On the standard up to 38 the upload is only up to 2Mbps.
On Extra (up to 78Mbps) the upload is up to 20Mbps.
Edit: pwatson types quicker than me!

If, on the other hand, you want to eek out every inch of speed from the connection, and don't mind paying more to achieve that, then the higher speed might be for you. Remember though, if you enter into a contract with the higher speed, then determine it isn't what you want, you might be tied for the contract term.
The biggest issue in my decision would be the poor upload speed on the 40Mbps product. Which is why I would say if upload speed is important to you, you will want the 80Mbps product.
Also be aware that many other ISPs (including BT), still offer up to 10Mbps upload on their 40Mbps product. Plusnet's decision to only offer 2Mbps upload on the 40Mbps product is a big bone of contention among many customers.

Quote from: Spruance Never been as low as 2Mbps here.
The 38Mbps product now only has a maximum upload speed of 2Mbps. It doesn't matter if your line can support faster, 2Mbps is the maximum.
You were lucky to get the 40/10 product before they changed it 40/2.

Plusnet haven't sold the 40/10 option for a long time (which is available from BTw and sold by a lot of other ISPs).

I notice that PN's up to 76Mbps still has unrestricted upload but that is the one that PN themselves advised me not to have as my line can only handle 54Mbps download.
Maybe I won't renew my Line Rental Saver quite just yet!
