Which to go for upto 38 or upto 76

During sign up my speed was between the range of 35-55mbps. Should I go for  upto38 thinking 55 is unlikely or be lucky and go for upto78? Any thoughts.

A factor in your decision may be upload speed - 2Mbps up on the slower product, or 20Mbps up on the faster one.  Also note that BT Wholesale now have 55/10 as a product though I'm not aware of any ISPs selling it yet...

Re: Which to go for upto 38 or upto 76

What are you expecting in the way of upload speed?
On the standard up to 38 the upload is only up to 2Mbps.
On Extra (up to 78Mbps) the upload is up to 20Mbps.
Edit: pwatson types quicker than me!

Re: Which to go for upto 38 or upto 76

If you are not concerned about upload speed being 2Mbps, I would opt for the lower speed product as experience seems to be that speeds are usually lower than quoted at signup, and that is before the effects of crosstalk can deteriorate speeds further. There is also the argument that you won't be getting a large chunk of the speed you are paying for (though that is just the nature of the product).
If, on the other hand, you want to eek out every inch of speed from the connection, and don't mind paying more to achieve that, then the higher speed might be for you. Remember though, if you enter into a contract with the higher speed, then determine it isn't what you want, you might be tied for the contract term.
The biggest issue in my decision would be the poor upload speed on the 40Mbps product. Which is why I would say if upload speed is important to you, you will want the 80Mbps product.
Also be aware that many other ISPs (including BT), still offer up to 10Mbps upload on their 40Mbps product. Plusnet's decision to only offer 2Mbps upload on the 40Mbps product is a big bone of contention among many customers.

Re: Which to go for upto 38 or upto 76

Also note that if your line cannot achieve better than 40Mb/s download there's no point in going for a higher speed. It's not proportional. A line that connects at 38Mb/s on a 40/2 package will do the same on an 80/10 package. But as others have said an 80/10 package might still get you a better upload speed though if you're only syncing at 38Mb/s I doubt you'll get much of a better upload either.

Re: Which to go for upto 38 or upto 76

I switched to Fibre in August 2014 with the original intention of going for the 76 Mbps product but was advised by PN that the most my line could manage was 54Mbps. Hence I took their advice and opted for the 38 Mbps download having been told that there was every chance of achieving 38 Mbps or very close to it.  I generally run a speed check every day and uploads usually range from around 15 to 17Mbps on the (up to) 38Mbps download product. Never been as low as 2Mbps here.

The 38Mbps product now only has a maximum upload speed of 2Mbps. It doesn't matter if your line can support faster, 2Mbps is the maximum.
You were lucky to get the 40/10 product before they changed it 40/2.

You were lucky to get the 40/1020 product before they changed it 40/2.

Plusnet haven't sold the 40/10 option for a long time (which is available from BTw and sold by a lot of other ISPs).

Re: Which to go for upto 38 or upto 76

Just picking up on this again and am actually quite shocked to learn of the 2Mbps upload restriction. No-one from Plusnet has mentioned anything at all about this to me but then my product contract runs until 14 August 2016 as I agreed to a two year fix to get a better price. I was actually just reviewing BT prices because as a former BT phone customer they still bombard me with mail-shots hoping to tempt me back but until now I have been happy to stay with PN.
I notice that PN's up to 76Mbps still has unrestricted upload but that is the one that PN themselves advised me not to have as my line can only handle 54Mbps download. Shocked
Maybe I won't renew my Line Rental Saver quite just yet!  Wink
