What do the Ellacoyas class Photobucket as?

I am trying to download my albums from Photobucket. At the moment, my 500MB download is telling me 4 hours!!! That seems to be incredibly slow on a fibre connection. I can only guess that the ellacoyas have it prioritised in the slow lane!!

Re: What do the Ellacoyas class Photobucket as?

You can check for yourself using wireshark.
On the current Unlimited packages, each priority of traffic can use all of your line's bandwidth if you're not receiving any higher priority traffic. The traffic prioritisation is only supposed to make a difference when you're doing more than one kind of activity at the same time. So Plusnet's traffic management is unlikely to be the reason for the slow speed.

Re: What do the Ellacoyas class Photobucket as?

I'll have a look into wireshark, but it is the PN traffic shaping that seems to be having an effect. I am able to browse at normal speeds and receive email. I am not doing anything time sensitive, like Skype and i'm not streaming anything either. My Photobucket download has just failed and had to be restarted again. It is now telling me 10hrs to download the files!!

Wireshark downloade in about 15 seconds, so no issues there. I have no idea what it is doing though? It looks like a specialised piece of software to me  Huh

Re: What do the Ellacoyas class Photobucket as?

Quite often sites like Photobucket will limit the download rate so big downloads don't affect the browsing of others.
As above, you shouldn't find the traffic prioritisation making any difference to the download rate if you're not downloading loads of other stuff in the background - you should have the fastest rate your line offers less whatever bandwidth you're using for other downloads or streaming.

Are you using the Photobucket Backup for Windows application or downloading the stuff manually ?

Re: What do the Ellacoyas class Photobucket as?

I realise they use a system to ensure quality of service to their users, but this download speed is crippled.  I am downloading the folders manually as I don't want all of them. (That said, I would have been happy for it to take that amount of time when I had my sub 2meg speeds!!)

Re: What do the Ellacoyas class Photobucket as?

You may well find they have throttled it from their end then (I could be wrong).
On my web server I can configure it to throttle downloads once they have hit a certain threshold. Their systems may have misidentified you as a leecher or similar and restricted your download speed.
How are you downloading ? HTTP / FTP ?

By http I would say. Clicking on the link within my account, hitting the "I am not a robot" captcha link and starting the download. I will be up around 6am tomorrow, so will fire up the laptop again if I remember and try it then.

Re: What do the Ellacoyas class Photobucket as?

As far as I'm aware if your downloading off their website it should be classed as HTTP traffic so there shouldn't be any issues.
I would imagine they may be limiting it at their end but I'll have a word to see if the prioritisation is different.

Re: What do the Ellacoyas class Photobucket as?

Yesterday I was getting 35 KB/s, this morning it was between 300- 500 KB/s and this afternoon as I continue, it is 50- 80 KB/s. They obviously don't want you to download what you upload!!

Try using their own Windows / Mac application and see if that gets round the bandwidth limiting.

Re: What do the Ellacoyas class Photobucket as?

I've downloaded the folders I wanted now. It was a very up and down process speeds wise. Thanks for the comments, i'll look into the Windows software if I need it next time.
