What do BT do when a fibre product change is requested

A bit of background

I am on 80/20 but with the profile set to retransmission high which rather clobbers the IP Profile so that the speed test results are sub 40Mb/s using the BT Speed test despite

Connection speed (kbps): 48099 8997
SNR margin (dB): 3.4 5.5

So if I request a change from 80/20 to 40/10 is the change made at the cab and, if so, does a reset take place automatically or would I be stuck with the same profile which could take months to change

A side issue - if I ask for a change at this time would I move initially to 40/2 or straight to 40/10

To add - and I don't understand it

The BT Test gives this

1. Best Effort Test:
Download Speed : 32.83 Mbps
2. Upstream Test:
Upload Speed : 8.15 Mbps

whereas TBB gives this

as the BT Test didn't give the present IP Profile (failed as usual) I don't know what it actually is

Re: What do BT do when a fibre product change is requested

I have for more than a decade found the BTW test to be accurate, but sometime in the last few months it has changed to giving me results way lower than reality on my 20CN ADSL connection.

As nothing else has changed, either the BTW test has gone faulty, or there could be some issue with recent Firefox releases.  I will try running a test later (when my gigabytes of Steam updates have completed) with an old version of Firefox to see if that gives me a different result.

Re: What do BT do when a fibre product change is requested

Thats why I use netperf from a pc (Raspberry pi) to double check, it removes the 'Browser Ellement' from the test.
I have G.INP Enabled on the Downstream.

Live Stats.....

Max: Upstream rate = 6289 Kbps, Downstream rate = 47772 Kbps
Bearer: 0, Upstream rate = 2000 Kbps, Downstream rate = 40000 Kbps
Bearer: 1, Upstream rate = 0 Kbps, Downstream rate = 0 Kbps

Netperf Download test

netperf -D -0.5 -H flent-london.bufferbloat.net -t TCP_MAERTS -l 10

Recv Send Send
Socket Socket Message Elapsed
Size Size Size Time Throughput
bytes bytes bytes secs. 10^6bits/sec

87380 16384 16384 10.00 36.22

Netperf Upload
netperf -D -0.5 -H flent-london.bufferbloat.net -t TCP_STREAM -l 10

Recv Send Send
Socket Socket Message Elapsed
Size Size Size Time Throughput
bytes bytes bytes secs. 10^6bits/sec

87380 16384 16384 11.23 1.66

BTW Test (Thanks Kitz) and further info

http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/btwperformancetest.htm

Testing From..... Birmingham as I'm in the SouthEast

http://217.35.209.142 - Manchester RAS
http://217.32.105.42 - St Albans
http://193.113.4.154 - Birmingham

Download speedachieved during the test was - 36.17 Mbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 20 Mbps-38.67 Mbps .
 Additional Information:
IP Profile for your line is - 38.67 Mbps

2. Upstream Test: -provides background information.

Upload Speed

1.54 Mbps

0 Mbps
2 Mbps
Max Achievable Speed

Upload speed achieved during the test was - 1.54Mbps
 Additional Information:
Upstream Rate IP profile on your line is - 2 Mbps

To conclude, netperf is a london based test, and BTW I selected Birmingham from list above.
Last time I checked thats a 360 mile round trip vs 100 mile, in miliseconds thats 10ms vs 17ms plus routing which explains the slight loss I'm getting on the BTW Test.

Netperf 36.22 Down 1.66 Up

BTW    36.17 Down  1.54 Up

Sorry to Bore you with my thoughts... Smiley

@Gandalf

Any chance of answering the opening post which has been sidetracked

This is the relevant bit

So if I request a change from 80/20 to 40/10 is the change made at the cab and, if so, does a reset take place automatically or would I be stuck with the same profile which could take months to change

A side issue - if I ask for a change at this time would I move initially to 40/2 or straight to 40/10

it's a remote change (I think at the D-SLAM) that we'd put through, which happens within 1 working day.

We should put it through to 40/10.

From 31st October 2022, I no longer have a regular presence here as I’ve moved on to a new role.
