Since Saturday the 9th, my internet connection has been extremely unstable, with continual disconnections and re-connections. Is this due to being moved onto the new network or something else ?

Online chat seems to be there for me. Are you using an ad-blocker or anti-tracking such as Ghostery in your browser? Both have been reported as blocking chat.

Quite possible - although the button was greyed out, rather than not doing anything.
Apparently the problem is caused by a copper joint at an external location. Unfortunately the wet weather causes real problem with the connection, and repairs have been delayed for 72 hours...
