Unlimted Fibre, but only getting 4-5mb download on p2p?

Hello.
iv recently got Unlimited Fibre broadband from Plusnet.
when the engineer came to install it he did a speed test which came back at 80mb at the openreach box.
when i do a speedtest its sating 37mb.
How come when im downloading via p2p (all torrents from a private site and good leeches and seeds.) im only getting a max of 4.4mb ?
Can anyone help or explain why please?
iv read that plusnet throttle it, and they don't, so which is it?
can it be fixed?
Thanks in advanced Smiley

We don't apply rate limits.
Can you confirm the speeds you're seeing on the P2P client? Are they 4.4Mb/s (lower case b) or 4.4MB/s (capital B).

In which case you need to multiply the value by 8 to give 35.2Mbps
Also Unlimited Fibre  is up to 40Mbps whereas Unlimited Fibre Extra is up to 80Mbps so you are being limited to 40Mbps by Plusnet

Pretty much as Oldjim says, 4.4MB/s is around what I'd expect on a 37Mb/s line.

Re: Unlimted Fibre, but only getting 4-5mb download on p2p?

Hello,
Why does it work like that?
if im paying for a service of 80MB (37MB on speedtest.net) shouldnt i be getting 37MB or as close as possible?
How does the split into 8 work?
Can someone please explain?
Thank you

Re: Unlimted Fibre, but only getting 4-5mb download on p2p?

The service you're on is an up to 38Mb/s service, that's Megabits.
The speeds you're seeing on the P2P client are 4.4MB/s, the capital B shows that's Megabytes.
There are 8 bits in a byte, so if the P2P client actually displayed the speeds in the same way we do, it'd show around 35Mb/s as opposed to 4.4MB/s.
I hope this helps to clarify the issue.

Hi Chris,
That does explain a lot.
But somewhat misleading if im honest.
Most people including me though it was 35MB/s not Mb/s.
But we learn everyday.
Thanks for explaining, least i know where i stand and what im paying for.

nothing misleading about it all.
not plusnet (or any other ISP) fault that you misunderstood what you were reading.

Re: Unlimted Fibre, but only getting 4-5mb download on p2p?

Hi again,
35MB/s would be 280Mb/s, which across the copper cabling still used by Fibre To The Cabinet, would be an amazing speed!
I've just double checked our sales pages to make sure they display the correct 'b' and they do show the lower case b for the speeds as they should do.

Re: Unlimted Fibre, but only getting 4-5mb download on p2p?

A lot of people ignore or are unaware of the effect capitalisation has on SI/metric values. I used to regularly pick people up on it but got so much flak that I gave up.
Another common one you see is 'mb' as in "35mb/s". That means 35 millibits per second where 'milli' means one thousandth of. So 35mb/s would be 3.5 bytes every one thousand seconds or about 12.6 bytes per hour Shocked
It's a shame really. I think the system of units and multiples used by the metric system and SI units is very elegant. But to many people a kilometre is a unit and if I said that New York was 5.6 megametres from London they'd be confused  Smiley

Confusion and partly lazyiness from it peps (too) have caused the confusion. Most people don't don't know the difference between a bit and a byte and then you get the lazyness of just calling transfer as either meg or Gig and of course we use the same units for storage so to the layperosn meg means megabyte all the time when its not always the case ..
