Underwhelming fibre speed, VPN, and how to set up my plusnet modem as modem only......?

Morning all

I have recently 'upgraded' to Fibre from a broadband line.

Firstly, I am a little disappointed with the line speed, the estimate was 40mb, or 38mb I think it was, but an online check consistently gives me an upload speed of around 2.3, but most notably a download speed of only 13mb, roughly 1/3rd of what I was anticipating, and only around 10% quicker than the standard broadband it replaced.
I'm only about a mile from my exchange as well.
Anyone seen similar results, and obtained an improvement?

To be honest, I would probably be happy to see 26mb for a download speed.

Additionally, I am currently unable to use VPN for my workplace, it simply errors - I forget the exact error at the mo, but can try again over the weekend.
I have been told I need to enable PPTP forwarding, but unlike on Virgin boxes there is no simple tickbox - I think I found it under firewall settings, but it seems you have to specify the devices that get this treatment, as opposed to everything that connects to your router - does that sound correct?

I'm also a little underwhelmed with the range of the plusnet router modem, as it frequently drops out from the upstairs office, something my old Netgear router did not do.
I have bought a Linksys router - tis one here: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Linksys-MAX-STREAM-MU-MIMO-Gigabit-Wireless/dp/B01B65ZNXQ/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_2?i...

but understand I would then need to change the setting on the Plusnet one, so it runs as a modem only - I have had a look on the interface, and cannot see this as an obvious option - presumably many people on here must have done a similar thing, any pointers?

Thanks

Dan

Re: Underwhelming fibre speed, VPN, and how to set up my plusnet modem as modem only......?

the fiber broadband your are using i assume is the FTTC with a BT modem. First how long have you been connected. This kind of connection has a Digital line management (DLM). If it detects too many disconnections in a given time frame the system thinks there is a settings issue and starts to reduce the speed to improve reliability. The DLM can last 7 days. I leave my modem on 24/7. Also I'm  not keen on having a modem and a router. The BT modem is locked. I now use a fritzbox it was expensive but i get awesome down and up speeds. It gives more control over settings. I recently found out that my IP address changes every day between 3-4 am that's because i set up the fritzbox to email me when it changes.

Check your cabling and positioning, electrical interference can affect performance. Swap out the cables you may have a bad cable.

there are a lot of other things like your PC connection to the router.

Hope this can give you some help.

my last speed test here  http://speedtest.btwholesale.com/

gave me 73Mbps down and 16Mbps up.

But i do think im lucky i was complaining to my self about the other 6Mbps i wasn't getting but the 79Mbps is kind of a perfect world setting.

Google line speed issues that's what i did

good luck

To start with it would be worth logging on to the PN Router, go to the Troubleshooting tab, then post the Helpdesk details on here, but delete any personal details such as your Broadband User Name.

Right a few things to get through here.

1) Goto http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest/speedtest2.html and run a speedtest. Test with an ethernet cable (wireless may reduce the speed test results)

2) goto http://www.dslchecker.bt.com/ and enter your phone number and paster the estimates for your FTTC.

3) 2 Mbps is the maximum upload on a 40 Mbps download contract.

4) Not easily possible to turn on modem only mode you need to splash some more cash on an openreach modem from ebay or similar or a http://www.amazon.co.uk/TP-LINK-TD-W9970-Wireless-Router-Interchangeable/dp/B013OXVA6M?
