Thankyou folks :) Adverts or PlusNet profiling slowing page loading help?

Hi,
I've noticed over recent months that many web pages take many seconds to load and convinced it's down to adverts loading judging by what I see on the status line.
I've got more or less 35Mbps download via FTTC, so I wonder if anyone can advise on whether this delay in loading, where some pages take 10 secs before you can scroll down the results is down to the congestion of the advert source or whether it is a PlusNet priority issue?
It just seems to be getting worse and I don't see the same delays when using a neighbours BT Infinity provided connection.
I had to change my homepage from MSN UK to Google UK to speed up the point where I could do a search as the MSN site took forever Sad
It's not a PC, tablet or a laptop issue as I have many to choose from.
Not a complaint, just curious Smiley

this should be moved to another board to try to identify the problem  - to sort out which one are you on ADSL or FTTC
EDIT
Need to go to Specsavers - moved to Fibre

Re: Adverts or PlusNet profiling slowing page loading help?

Can you post the result of a speedtest - this would probably be the most informative http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest.html?utm_source=mainsite&utm_medium=navigation&utm_campaign=...
Also which browser are you using and have you tried another one to see if the same thing happens

Re: Adverts or PlusNet profiling slowing page loading help?

Hi Oldjim,
Thanks for putting into a better queue Smiley
As previously mentioned I have multiple PC's, laptops, tablets etc running a mix of XP, Vista, Windows 8.1 and have IE various versions , Firefox, Chrome plus their Android versions too.
The main pages load almost instantaneously but then the 'loading' rotating symbol spins and several seconds later all the ads and junk appear and then I can scroll down the page.
I thought being on FTTC unlimited etc there was no traffic profiling (that may have hanged in the years though) and have opted out as best I can of all targeted ads.
Attached two Thinkbroadband speedtest results - the horrible one first and the older version I prefer second Smiley  seems to suggest not a 'speed' issue.
I wonder if there is a debug tool to record just what is being downloaded and times when I open a web page?
Extra info below and hope my jpg's attach Smiley
From my control panel:-

Re: Adverts or PlusNet profiling slowing page loading help?

I second installing an adblocker.
Most browsers let you go into a developer tools and then show a graphic of what parts of the page loaded when and how long they took.
For example, in Chrome hit F12 to get into developer tools, ctrl-F5 to reload the page with no cache, then the Network tab will show what was going on.
Looks pretty much the same in IE (except you need to enable the Network tracking as well for it to work).
Might help you track down more precisely what is slowing things down.

Re: Adverts or PlusNet profiling slowing page loading help?

Changing DNS helped me with this. I went over to OpenDNS but there's also GoogleDNS. Both are good. I also find IE is the most painful with sites that have lots of ads on them. The scroll bar pretty much locks until the whole page has loaded. Chrome seems least affected to me and maybe Firefox next best. As also suggested an ad blocker can help too. I use Adblock Plus sometimes.

Re: Adverts or PlusNet profiling slowing page loading help?

Thanks folks for all your suggestions and I'll have a look at the debugging mode and an adblocker.
I already tried changing DNS to the Google ones 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 and didn't make a lot of difference but I'll do more tests.
As to high ping value, that is a factor I appear to have little control over Sad and to be honest when I use Speedtest.net I always get about 21ms and when I use Thinkbroadband original tester or the new one it is always higher and sometimes 40 -50ms.
As I don't do any on-line gaming I've never worried too much about it?
I am awaiting my neighbour to come back from holiday so I can take my laptop and conduct tests on his BT Infinity connection.
Many thanks once again..
Pete

Re: Thankyou folks :) Adverts or PlusNet profiling slowing page loading help?

Cheesy
Thankyou so much for everyone who mentioned Adblockers Smiley  I cannot believe the difference in my browsing experience in Chrome, Firefox AND IE.
I was naïve enough to assume 'opting out' of Google ads and ad choices actually did something Sad
An old dog certainly can learn new tricks...
