Terrible Wireless Connection

Hi Guys,
Posting this information so that it might help anyone else with similar issues.
No guarantees of course and before doing anything I backed up anything I wanted from my PC, and was fully prepared to re-install windows etc from scratch.
Ant-virus is installed and running, bitDefender in my case.
All software mentioned is free to use.
I haven't had any issues at all, but please backup anything important just in case.
Ok here we go.
Upgraded to fibre from ADSL a short time ago expecting 38mps or close to it.
One surprise was that upload is only 2mps, didn't know that as everyone else offers 10mps which is what I was expecting.
No problem for me as I don't upload much and the games I play only average 500kbps.
My place is open plan so I need to connect wirelessly, my previous connection gave me 16-18mps.
After discussions with Plusnet, loads of frustration, changing the channel loads of times etc, the average speed via http://www.speedtest.btwholesale.com/ was 14.77mps.
Without a laptop I was unable to connect via cable without loads of agro, which is what support insisted I needed to do.
At this point I started to investigate the problem myself via forums etc.
1. Didn't believe the problem was a conflict with neighbours using the same channel, but downloaded a utility which scanned all the wireless channels to see if anyone nearby was using the same channel. Nothing found, set my connection to use channel 11.
2. Pinged my router - avg 2msecs. Pinged internet, averaged 89msecs hmmm.
3. Checked windows network, wireless showing 320mps connection so what the hell is the problem.
4. Did some more research and found this website http://www.broadbandspeedchecker.co.uk/guides/improve_wireless_internet_speed.aspx?sid=guides
Reading through it I found a link to a utility called TCPOptimiser http://www.speedguide.net/downloads.php I downloaded version 3.0.8.
Only tiny (no need to install) so copied it to my desktop and read the instructions carefully.
5. Ran the utility and at first thought nothing had happened until I spotted a backup file on my desktop.
Re-booted my PC and ran http://www.speedtest.btwholesale.com/ again and WOW!!.
My connection has averaged 35mps ever sinceCheesy Cheesy Cheesy
To monitor my internet connection I use tbbMeter http://www.thinkbroadband.com/tbbmeter.html.
The only thing I changed was to set the download limit to unlimited.
Just drag it to the size you want and leave it running.
If the information helps anyone then it has been worth posting, if not there are some decent articles on the websites mentioned which are worth a read.
Happy downloading,

Re: Terrible Wireless Connection

Useful information Wooks. And on the point about the 40/20 package becoming 40/2, I think a lot of people will not realise the impact of that. As cloud based services become more and more prevalent, the need to upload larger and larger amounts of data will become key. BT for example, still offer the 10 Mbps upload on their 40 product.
A lot of people don't worry about upload speed, but that is changing, and PN seem to be lowering upload speeds rather than increasing them.

Re: Terrible Wireless Connection

Yeah, found info on the upload speed researching the problem I had.
The difference in cost to Plusnet is sod all per year so I don't understand why they only offer 2mps, unless they want to "persuade" people to take the 80mps package.
For me 2mps is acceptable at the moment but long term I will have to wait and see.
