Speed tailing off again

A couple of months ago, I raised a query on the old system about my linespeed.

When I first got fibre from Plusnet I was getting a download speed of 69Mb in 2012 and 2013.

The Plusnet deal was for 80Mb, although the “estimated speed was 70Mbps”.

The actual download speed gradually declined …

After talking to Plusnet, the Plusnet Linespeed rose to 78Mbps on 2016 03 05.

However, the download speed I was actually getting was unchanged at around 55Mbps

2016 04 08 Openreach man visited my house to check things out.

He tested at the BT socket and revealed …

  1. a) Line to exchange perfect
  2. b) Wiring in house seems perfect
  3. c) Download test = 55Mb
  4. d) Other test showed max possible on line 64Mb
  5. e) He wondered why capped at 64 – and why Plusnet said it should be 78
  6. f) He reset Dynamic Line Management … but it didn’t change my download speed

He then tested wiring outside front door – “perfect” – then replaced connectors

He then phoned HQ to check – he seemed to be advised to check at the cabinet

He went away for 15 minutes to check the cabinet

Verdict = “18Mb being lost between the house and the cabinet”

He then said he had to do things at the cabinet and at the wiring outside our front door …

That was the last I saw of him, but I’ve been checking the speeds regularly since.

In mid April, the download speed had moved up to around 62, but the Plusnet Linespeed fell back to 64.6.  Last week it fell again to 64.4 …  So we are going back to where we were 2 months ago …

To summarise

                                           Plusnet                    Actual

                                         Linespeed               download

Historically (2012/3)                     80                            69+

2016 02                                        58                            55

2016 03                                        78                            55

2016 04                                        64.6                         62

2016 05                                        64.4                         61

Huh                                               sliding back to         55 ?

What happened to the 80 ?  Or 78 ?  Where does the 64 come from ?

What’s happened to the 18Mb lost between the house and the cabinet ?

I know my internet access is mostly ok, but the point is that, a) it is not what it's supposed to be and b) it looks as if there is a problem that is still not resolved and could be getting worse

Re: Speed tailing off again

Losing speed between the cabinet and the house could be a factor of things.

1,) it could be a fault
2,) the quality of the copper
3,) the length of the line

Plusnet offer up-to 78mb but can't guarantee it give the points 2 & 3 above. What does BT adsl checker say the speeds you should be seeing?

Re: Speed tailing off again

are you using a BT modem and plusnet router?

Also when are you doing these tests? what does Current Line Speed state? I'd also get IP profile from btwholesale as this will always be correct. PlusNET's sometimes is slow at updating, and if BT's IP profile is greater than plusnets you'll see a slower speed.

Re: Speed tailing off again

Router / Modem = TP-Link VR900.

Plusnet already know most of the information - they arranged the BT visit 2 months ago.

My speed test info attached.

Bearing in mind I've already done the various tests, so have Plusnet and BT, I am expecting a reply from Plusnet ...
