Speed slowing, frequent dropped connection

Over the last month my (Samknows) average speed has dropped from around 35 to 7.

With downtimes totalling over 16 hours.

Please see attachment for screen shot from sam knows report.

This can't be right, surely.

Re: Speed slowing, frequent dropped connection

@worzel It is decidedly not right. Have you run through the checks on the 'speed faults' topic towards the top of the first page of the board?

Can you post a screen shot of your routers statistics - from the 'troubleshooting' tab  - obscuring or deleting  any 'personal' details?

Re: Speed slowing, frequent dropped connection

Thank you for your reply @jab1

The performance test results from BT Wholesale is attached.

Not sure why this says "For your connection, the maximum achievable download speed is 8.06 Mbps"

When I've been getting 25-35+ for several years now as can be seen from the previous Samknows screen shot.

Re: Speed slowing, frequent dropped connection

That BT report is a load of carp, @worzel , because you clearly do have an issue - your line is capable of 39.5Mb/s but  the noise margin is  way up, suggesting you have plenty of 'headroom', although it looks like you've almost been returned to ADSL speeds by something else - don't know what, sorry.

My only suggestion is to call PN and ask them to a full set of tests.

Re: Speed slowing, frequent dropped connection

The first thing in the fault diagnosis should have been listen to the phone line, dial 17070 option 2 - chances are you have developed a noise fault, hence DLM has reduced your speeds.

Good point, @Mustrum , sorry I missed that as I normally don't, but in my defence I'm in the middle of a slightly 'heated' debate elsewhere.😉

Re: Speed slowing, frequent dropped connection

Thanks for the tip. (I never use the landline to be honest)

There is noise - crackling - between the "Quiet line test" announcements, which was an issue when I was on ADSL, but not since I switched to Fibre.

I've raised a fault ticket. Hopefully this will sort it out.

Re: Speed slowing, frequent dropped connection

Just had an answer from Plusnet.

I have tested your line today and it appears the issue you reported is no longer occurring.

The connection is stable, with no drops. The connection is also running at a good speed for your line.

This is  partly true, I haven't had any dropout since Friday, but my line speed, even after multiple reboots of everything is still just 7.47 Mbps as it has been since 24th April. Not the 34 Mbps I had back in March and in the years since changing to Fibre.

Naturally I stated all this in my reply to the ticket.

Re: Speed slowing, frequent dropped connection

Have you retested the line for noise? - if it is still there, it needs sorting.

Any chance of a current stats page?

Re: Speed slowing, frequent dropped connection

Thanks for all your help @jab1

Noise is still there , perhaps fainter than it was.

Current  stats attached.

Re: Speed slowing, frequent dropped connection

They have done nothing - those figures are atrocious!!

Sorry to ask for more - but what does: https://www.broadbandchecker.btwholesale.com/#/ADSL say? - obscure your phone number.

Re: Speed slowing, frequent dropped connection

If I'm reading it right, checker says what it should say 35-50, which I used to have, of course,

And is the same as stated on the confirmation email I got when I signed up to Fibre. last June (I thought it was longer than that but then 2020 was a odd year!)

Re: Speed slowing, frequent dropped connection

The 'Observed Speeds' on there prove there is a massive problem, given your attenuation. Ask them to get a properly trained person to look at it.
