Ran speedtest (several times) and download is down a lot. Was 37mb, now around 12/18mb. When I watch the download graphics,it starts slow, then downloads in spurts. I don't know how representative this graphics is, but the end result is the download speed is down.
Can someone tell me how to access the router stats? And what to look out for?
So basically ....Help!!

What antivirus / firewall do you have (if any)? Certain antivirus software, in particular, can cause symptoms similar to what you describe "starts slow, then downloads in spurts".
Router (Modem) line stats are not readily available from the BT Openreach modem (some can be 'unlocked' though) but what you probably need to check first is your line speed, the most reliable method is to run the BT wholesale performance checker http://speedtest.btwholesale.com/ then select 'Further Diagnostics' after the initial test and you should get your BT IP profile (this is few percent below your actual sync speed).
