Slowdown in Download Speed

Hi,

could I please request a GEA test on my line, due to a lower than normal download speed.

I can now only obtain 42 Mbps Download speed (via ethernet cable), where as I always obtained between 50-55 Mbps.
My Upload speed is between 7-8 Mbps which as far as I can remember, it has always been.

Having noticed the problem a number of months ago and not being able to monitor my line stats, I purchased a Huawei (Unlocked) BT Modem with the latest firmware.
I can now view my line stats, which tells me that the line as been stable for 39 days and has a Download Attainable rate (kbit/s) of 56012 (56 Mbps) and an Upload Attainable rate (kbits/s) of 8888 (8.8 Mbps).

My Plusnet account tells me that my Current Line Speed (Download): 51Mbps on my Unlimited Fibre Extra package, but various speed testers show that I never get more than 42 Mbps Download speed.

This makes me wonder if my line is Banded or is suffering from another problem ?

So a GEA test would be very much appreciated.

Thanks 😊

Re: Slowdown in Download Speed

Hi @RPi_User,

I am afraid it is not allowing us to test your line at the moment as it is giving us an error. I have raised this issue to our suppliers who have advised that a local engineer will be dispatched to the local exchange to look into the issue. Please allow 2 working days for completion.

Thank you for your patience.

Re: Slowdown in Download Speed

Hi @Beyhive,

Many thanks for the update and for raising the issue with the suppliers.

Hopefully they will find and rectify the fault 🤞

Kind regards

Garry

Re: Slowdown in Download Speed

Thanks for getting back to us Garry,

I've checked the fault and I can see our suppliers have sent this back to us advising no fault was found. I've tested your line and the tests aren't showing any issues with your sync speed of 48.8mbps within the line expectations/speed estimates of between 40mbps and 57.1mbps so I'd doubt our suppliers would investigate further.

Your line does look to be banded though it doesn't look to be artificially restricting your speeds as the banding is set at 74mbps which means that your line can physically sync at a speed anywhere between 0mbps and 74mbps.

If you've not tried already can you plug your router into what's known as the test socket explained Here which should rule out any internal wiring including the faceplate of your master socket from causing an issue.

I'm also attaching a copy of our testing if you're interested:

Re: Slowdown in Download Speed

Hi @Gandalf ,

Thank you for getting back to me with the GEA Test Detail.

I can see from the GEA Test that there appears to be no fault with the line, and that with the banding set at 74 mbps is much higher than my sync speed.

I accept that the suppliers would not investigate further, as it shows that I am connected between the line expectations/speed estimates.

I will try once again the test socket as you suggested.

But, can you please expand on why you received an error when @Beyhive tried to test my line (just curious) ?

Many Thanks,

Garry

Re: Slowdown in Download Speed

Hi Garry,

No problem, let us know how things go.

With regards to the error we got when we tested your line yesterday, it was likely just due to an issue with testing system we use.

@Beyhive then got in touch with BT and they manually progressed the fault in the system to investigate further, which didn’t have the desired effect as no fault was then found with the service. 🙁

Thanks,

Anoush

Re: Slowdown in Download Speed

Hi Anoush,

Thanks for the speedy reply and explanation.

I will certainly let you know how things go, but I probably won't do anything until the weekend now because family members are currently using the internet.

Thanks again,

Garry
