Slow than expected speed - advice and help appreciated

I've recently had FTTC enabled and it's slower than I would expect (and hoped).

The BT dslchecker reports the following:

                            High  Low   High   Low   Handback

Range A (Clean)  80     65.8   20    19           58.1

The line first synced at about 20,000 / 56,000 which is below the handback threshold.  It has now improved to 19,999 / 68,621 which is admittedly above the handback threshold but is right at the bottom end of the line estimate.

The stats the router is reporting are:

Noise Margin: 15.3 / 4.9

Line attenuation: 9.2 / 9.9

Signal attenuation: 9.1 / 9.9

The attenuation in particular seems good, although it obviously the SNR that is limiting the speed.

The closest FTTC cabinet is only about 200 m away and hence if I'm connected that that one, which I may not be for all I know, I'm amazed I not synced at 20 / 80.

The house already has a Mk3 NTE fitted so that should prevent internal extensions causing problems.

Given the line is currently synced at over the handback threshold I'm guessing it will be difficult to get BT to investigate Sad

Is there anyway someone form PlusNet could run the tests you have available to see if that flags any problems?

Re: Slow than expected speed - advice and help appreciated

Hi Matthew.

Thanks for running the tests and posting the stats - it's much appreciated.

I'm not sure what the router is currently synced at, as I'm not at the house.  We are having work done so haven't moved in yet, which means I can only monitor things when I pop across to the house to check on progress.  I have been keeping an eye on the "hidden" stable rate page in the member area to give an indication of the sync speed.  This hasn't changed from a profile of 66.6 Mb although I appreciate that systems have changed and this doesn't work in the way it did a few years ago.

A couple of observation from the test:

Estimated Line Length In Metres 243.6

This is consistent with me being connected to the cabinet I thought I was - straight line along the pavements would be about 150m plus a bit more for the wiring taking a more scenic route.

Profile Name 0.128M-80M Downstream 5dB, Retransmission High - 0.128M-20M Upstream, Error Protection Off

Would I be correct in thinking this shows DLM is working with a 5dB SNR target?

It's probably best I check the sync speed next time I'm at the house and if it remains at 70 something leave it at that since that's broadly what I would expect from the line length.

Thanks again.

Re: Slow than expected speed - advice and help appreciated

Yes that's correct it's currently running at a 5db target.

Let us know once you've had the chance to check
