Hi Craig, welcome to the forum btw.

I activated Safe Surf on my account years ago and never found any restrictions with my usage. As far as your VPN goes, if it doesn't use any of the ports listed it shouldn't be a problem. The simple answer is to try it and see, you can always turn it off again.
Don't forget, after activating/deactivating Safe Search you need to drop the PPP Internet connection - that's the session to Plusnet not the sync to the Cab (or exchange for ADSL) and then reconnect for it to take effect (similar process for Safeguard). You do this by logging into your 2704n router and clicking the Disconnect button on the home page in the Internet Status box, wait 30 seconds and then click Connect.

Quote Safe Surf will block these common ports:

Application
TCP 412 DirectConnect
TCP 1214 Kazaa
TCP 4661 - 4662 eDonkey
UDP 4665 -4666 eDonkey
TCP 5498 - 5501 Hotline
UDP 6257 WinMX
TCP 6699 WinMX
TCP 6346-6347 Gnutella
TCP 6881-6889 BitTorrent
TCP Port 119 Usenet

Quote Please note: We can’t guarantee that Safe Surf will block all Peer-to-Peer and USENET traffic. Some Peer-to-Peer applications can be set to use a different port if the common port is blocked.

Brilliant, thanks for your help AnotherOne. Much appreciated. Nice clear answer.
Will take your advice and activate both Safe Surf and see how it goes.
I'll then activate SafeGuard as that seems to block a not of undesirable activity.
thanks

Is safe surf actually working these days? I had a feeling it was not.

Well you can always test it out, that rumour has been bandied about before with no proof - it's still present in the member centre.
