Router stats, are they ok?

Hello,
Can somebody determine from the router stats below if all is as good as can be with my service.

The 1.6db down figure is very low but is it ok? My main reason for asking is that the wi fi signal throughout the house  sometimes varies from non-existent to good. I have a few wifi repeaters about the house and use mains powerline for tv and pc. Dont appear to get any disconnections. Resetting the router normally sends both figures back to around 6db but over time the down figure will drop. Using a BT 6 router.

Many thanks,

John

@fred77

 1.6 dB is too low. In all probability you will be getting a lot of errors slowing down your actual download speed whilst leaving the sync speed at its normal level. If you have got a good line it should settle around 3dB.

I have experienced this once and switching the hub off using the switch on the back rather than the mains cured it after I switched back on.

Re: Router stats, are they ok?

Hello again,

i have followed Baldick's suggestion and restarted my router and these are the stats i get now!

The snr margin has returned to around 6db up and down but the speed has dropped terribly, now around 21mbps. Also my Line Attenuation has gone from 43 to 25.6db, which i think denotes a shorter line which should increase my speed not decrease it. Very strange.

I am now getting a down speed well below that which Plusnet have promised me.

I have restarted my router 3 times, twice last night and once this morning and the results are virtually identical.

Perhaps Baldrick could give me the benefit of his experience and/or anyone else.

Also I would like someone from Plusnet to check things out on my service.

Many thanks,

John

Re: Router stats, are they ok?

Hi John, I've taken a look into this for you and the tests aren't showing any issues with the broadband signal going into your router, but your download speed is now below the speed estimate of 26.5mbps.

If your router's plugged into your master telephone socket with no extension cabling in place, I'd recommend raising a fault at faults.plus.net so we can arrange an engineer visit to investigate further.

Feel free to post back once you've raised the fault and we'll make sure that's picked up as soon as we can.

Also I've added the test results below:

Re: Router stats, are they ok?

Hello again,

Thanks Gandalf for your reply.

I thought it might be a good idea before i reported a fault to disconnect the router by switching off tat the plug and removing it, then plugging in and switching on. This seems to have sirted my problem, but heavan knows why!

These are my router stats now, which look very simliar to those I regularly get except for the down SNR figure which falls overtime. Why the line attenuation figure fell previously i don't know but it is now back to where it was.

Anyway, all seems ok at present so I wont be raising a fault, but thanks for your help.

John

Re: Router stats, are they ok?

Hi John,

Thanks for getting back to me. No problem, I'm glad to see the good ol' turn it off and back on again sorted this for you.

Let me know if there are further issues or anything else you'd need help with.

Re: Router stats, are they ok?

@fred77

A couple of observations. Constantly turning the hub off and on is bad news. It can cause the DLM to think that you are having line drops and can automatically increase your SNR which will reduce your sync speed. If you are going to restart your hub always go in to the advanced settings and select Disconnect first. This shuts it down in a controlled manner. You will need to reverse the process when you switch back on.

With your decreasing SNR an interesting statistic is your actual download speed. It’s worth doing a regular speed check to track this. As your SNR reduces you might see the actual download speed reducing even though the sync speed stays constant. This would be because you have increasing errors meaning that the same data has had to be retransmitted to correct the errors.

Out of interest have you checked the performance when connected to the Test socket, that’s the one that you access by taking the front off your master socket, you may need to remove two screws? If you have a filtered master socket you will need to dig out a dangly filter. This should disconnect any extension wiring, which can make a difference to your speed.
