Remote Desktop not working on local network

Hi

So.. I'm a new customer to Plusnet and getting frustrated not being able to remote desktop from laptop to my PC.  Both are on windows 10 and this was working fine before I switched to the new Plusnet router.  I've read other articles about opening ports but not had any luck doing this.  I wouldn't have thought this was necessary as the are for forwarding requests from outside the local network not my local network?

A twist in the mix is I can remote onto my Raspberry Pi still?!  The fact the Pi works suggest its not the router, (although it might be using a different port), but I've not changed anything on the pc that would stop it working.

Think I will need to try and work out what service I added to the Pi

Re: Remote Desktop not working on local network

The service on the Pi is xrdp and uses port 3389

Re: Remote Desktop not working on local network

When trying to connect are you using the PC name or IP address?

Re: Remote Desktop not working on local network

Fix

@dp106 this a probably a silly suggestion but have you made sure that the computer you want to access remotely has been set to a private network and not a public one. This has happened to me before where my CCTV server running windows 7 has decided to class the network connection as public which has meant have to change it to private in network settings. When you first connected your remote computer to the plusnet router it would have seen it as a new network and should have asked if it was a private or public network. Check the network and sharing centre as this should list the network you are connected to and the type of connection it has been classed as.

Re: Remote Desktop not working on local network

You won't be able to connect to the internet while you do it, but you could try connecting the PCs to your old router to confirm RDP still works in case the router change is a red herring and something else has happened that you are not aware of.

Re: Remote Desktop not working on local network

If you can RDP to you Pi your unlikely to connect to another device unless you have multiple external IP addresses. Check your forwarding for port 3389, if it points to your Pi then change to local IP of the desktop.

RDP will work on multiple devices if all are on the same internal network, including your laptop.....

Re: Remote Desktop not working on local network

He's trying to do this on the internal network so the port forwarding & multiple external IPs are irrelevant!

Therfore so is the router.......

Re: Remote Desktop not working on local network

The router is only relevant if the devices in question are all connected to it and the LAN ports on it are switching ports. Speaking of switches do you have one of these @dp106 or is everything connected to the Router?

Re: Remote Desktop not working on local network

@Champnet Hence my suggestion to go back to the old router and confirm it still works!

Re: Remote Desktop not working on local network

@Anonymous Is right, for internal devices the PN supplied router is acting as a dumb switch, no port forwarding required.

@jelv asked about pinging the devices, no reply as yet, but I would suspect not all the devices are on the same network segment.

Re: Remote Desktop not working on local network

Thinking about this some more I suspect jordanc1230 might be on the right track. If the old router was  192.168.0.* and the new is 192.168.1.* Windows will see this as a new network and will ask if it is private or public.
