Re-graded from 40 to 80meg, download speed still stuck in the 30's

So this follows on from my botched home move with Plusnet earlier in the month - I moved into a property which is very close to a green cabinet and the speed estimates were indicative of being suitable for the "Extra" product, however Plusnet provisioned the line with BT at 40/10 instead of 80/20. Fast forward two weeks to today and call from a BT engineer who is "installing a new line" - after clearing up that confusion he sets about putting me on the 80/20 profile. My HG612 syncd up as expected and my upload speed is almost 18meg but my download speed is stuck at about 38meg (which it was before).

The BT engineer called back to say the line is returning a speedtest of 79meg from the cabinet but I explained it wasn't here (about 200m from the cab). He gave me the "training period" spiel (which I seem to get the impression is not applicable to fibre lines and never has been?). So, am I being sold a pup or will my line really improve over the next couple of days?

One speedtest;

Or maybe your PN profile has not yet been updated yet?

You're right that there's no 'training period' for fibre lines, proper fibre (FTTP) that is, but unfortunately you've got a VDSL(FTTC) connection for which I believe there will be.

PlusNet set me up on 80/20 but didn't order that product from BT so the PN side is fine - it was worth mentioning though thanks.

That's useful to know.

Not according to your "Current line speed"  you are syncing at 38 - that contradicts what you have said/suggests I am right, your profile has not caught up.

Re: Re-graded from 40 to 80meg, download speed still stuck in the 30's

I'm not following how that contradicts what I said - I said they set me up on 80/20 and that is absolutely clear from the screenshot that that is the case. I had assumed, because that value almost always matches a wired speedtest, that the download speed shown there was a real-world download speed and nothing to do with sync rates or profiles - both ends of the connection are, from the information I can see, set up on the 80/20 product.

@djbenson

Have you tried disconnecting the DSL for a minute or so then reconnecting? If that doesn’t work try a factory reset on your hub by pushing a paperclip or similar into the reset hole. Keep the switch closed for about 30 seconds.

Are you able to share your modem sync and attainable speeds?

Re: Re-graded from 40 to 80meg, download speed still stuck in the 30's

@Mustrum just to add, and this isn't meant with any ill feeling, but I queried with Plusnet what that download value in the account page is and it's an actual speedtest reported by the router and not related to line sync or profiles. I had a hunch it was so just checked it out with PN support.

Re: Re-graded from 40 to 80meg, download speed still stuck in the 30's

@djbenson  no ill feeling, but facts are facts - you are provisioned now and synced 80/20.

BTW test shows a 80/10 profile, but is not restricting upload speed.

PN Member centre shows download line speed restricted to 38, as does your speed test.

Are you by chance on a static IP?

Finding PN CS staff who know nothing about your profile and who will say things to fob you off is not an impossible task.

Your profile should catch up overnight and you may well get your download speeds as they should be tomorrow. But for now.....

Re: Re-graded from 40 to 80meg, download speed still stuck in the 30's

I am indeed on a static IP. I hadn’t ruled out being fobbed off, the reason people like me post here and question everything PN/BTO say is because they do fob people off so much, it’s really frustrating.

Thanks for your assistance, I’m happy to wait, I just wanted to know if I’d been told guff (again).

Cheers.
