I went fibre last Thursday, down load 35.6 up 16.5.
I was told I have 80/40 but I choose 40/20 as that is a huge improvement after ADSL at 4.5.
My question is if I can attain 80/40 why is my current speed 35.5 and not 40?
I'm not complaining just interested as to what causes the loss of a few Mb.

If you run the BT Speed Test http://speedtest.btwholesale.com/ and click on Further Diagnostics, it will give you your IP Profile.
With the 40/20 product, Plusnet provision you on the 80/20 product with their suppliers, but apply a downstream rate limit. If you go to your Member Centre here https://portal.plus.net/my.html?action=data_transfer_speed it will tell you the downstream limit (Current Line Profile).
What do you get from this site http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest.html ?

There are several losses due to different overheads. The 40 is a sync speed, and your profile will be a little below this to account for some overheads. Real download is likely to be a little below again because of the practicalities of things.
If you use wireless or have any local issues with your LAN, you may again lose a little speed.
My speedtests on thinkbroadband (http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest.html), one of the most reliable tests (also mentioned by AndyH), are typically between 37Mbps and peaks of 38Mbps.

In this case the sync speed may well be higher - the BT speedtest will show that - but it is capped at 40Mbps or 38.7Mbps (not sure which) by the Current Line Speed

I think Plusnet provision everyone on fibre with the 80/20 product now - but apply the downstream limiter if you chose the 40 Mbps Unlimited Fibre. As it's advertised at up to 38Mbps, I assume that's the rate limit applied rather than 40Mbps (for those who sync 40Mbps+).

Not really
The up to advertised speed is the one 10% of their customers can get
