Posted speed issues

Please don't take this the wrong way but I'm intruged by the posts about speed drops from say 70mbps to 60mbps and the demand with long threads to get the line sorted.
I'm trying to get my head round what actual effect this has or is it just numbers in a box?
I'm only getting circa 17mbps but it's been explained why and that's that. I have no real issues at 17 as it all works better than my 5mbps ADSL did. I suppose as more people are connected then others may experience lower speeds and I understand that. If I could get 60mbps I'd be over the moon and if it subsequently dropped to 50 or even 40 I'd still be happy.
Not a dig at anyone, just intruged about what effect is has on the online experience.
Let's be careful out there !

Re: Posted speed issues

In my case it is all the advertising BT particularly  of super fast BB which give the impression we can all have 76MB.
Also Providers will take money for up to 76Mb product when BT can't get better to me for them than what up to 38Mb gives me.

@kremmen
You've said what I've been thinking
I'm sure there are specialist users out there who need speed especially upload but many of the posters don't even know the terminology which I feel the serious users would  Tongue
I won't say I haven't learnt something from the posts but I feel they should major on the technical issues in a mutual help way and leave out the aggrieved customer stance  Lips_are_sealed

But it's advertised as an 'up to' product with all ISPs. The same with ADSL being up to 24Mbps, it doesn't mean everyone can get those speeds.

Which providers do that?
Plusnet provisions everyone on 80/20 now, irrespective of whether they've taken Unlimited Fibre or Unlimited Fibre Extra.

Re: Posted speed issues

indeed my line started off at 79/19.5 and stayed there for the first 6 months since then it dropped ot an average 69/18 and more recently seems to be averaging 50/15, the biggest reason for needing all that extra capacity is that I have 3 teenage kids who stream films all day long I like ot watch the odd film via amazon and we have other things that demand at least 20mb of line capacity, every 5meg decrease slims the margin on what we can use and if my service dropped below 50/15 my family wouldn't all be able to enjoy the excessive use they have been getting for a long time
we found this out when there was a throughput problem a few weeks ago when average speeds dropped to 30/8 for a weekend and the kids were all complaining that there stuff kept buffering or dropping out, I ended up unplugging there AP for a quite weekend and told them go read/
and as per the maint advisory the speed popped back up on the Monday to normal, but it proves two things to me first that BT failed to provide enough backhaul to facilitate the implementation of fibre products and then attempt to cover this failure up by saying as the lines age they provide a lesser performance than they did to start off with, second there refusal to FTTP ever customer has nothing to do with any problems laying the fibre and everything to do with limited capacity in the network for the traffic, a certain BTOR engineer explained load sharing to me and that if everyone in my exchange (50k) were hooked up to fibre they would all get a 10/10 max service because the backhaul could only offer that much, not even enough for a single channel iptv service in HD, they would need to add in another 600 backhaul lines to provide the service at the 80/20 service level although every connection would still be synced at 100/20 the bandwidth available is determined by the dslam so there not offering new connections in this area despite so far only 1k fibre users /

Re: Posted speed issues

Thanks for the feedback, it's interesting.
It seems that as more people take up broadband and some cabinets reach capacity then the slower it's likely to get. The other thing I've noticed is the complaints about the speed reduction when migrating from BT. I would have expected the same speed as it's the same tech through identical lines.

Re: Posted speed issues

that's down to the isp's owning the equipment and being oversubscribed or provisioned differently, iirc there is one fibre provider who offers 80/10 or 40/10 (because of the hardware they use) also bt provides the lines but the isp's set the speeds,
my line sync speed hasn't changed from the day it was installed and switched on but the bandwidth available to me has changed many times, either through local dynamic load sharing (junk gear in the exchange) on the backhaul or through plusnet managing the transport stream so everyone gets a fair chunk of it.
the last two I can understand but the former is in my view unforgivable cheapness and corporate greed driven, though lets be honest here, I would have bought a DSLAM/MSAN system that could handle providing the maximum throughput for every line, and I would of installed the backhaul capability that offered the capability with at least a +50% margin (for future upgrades in the system) not guestimated that 1 /10 would want the new service and bought hardware that matched that ability......

I don't understand. Why would an end user need to understand the technical aspects of how FTTC works in order to be eligible to make a complaint that they are no longer receiving the service they have been and are still paying for? I don't have a technical understanding of FTTC and the contractor that dropped my Openreach modem off certainly didn't. For instance what would make my recent complaint of my ds dropping from 75 to around 14 or even less of an evening less valid than someone who had a technical understanding of FTTC and had 'special needs'? We're both paying customers. Should I have just let it go and thought to myself oh well, I don't have any 'special needs' and I'm still getting a bit of service that I could at least use to surf with and just carry on paying for the Fibre Extra service even though I was only getting it in the daytime? Luckily for me my issues seem to have been sorted out but I can understand the frustration of other customers in the same situation.

Re: Posted speed issues

@woodm with a drop from 75 to 14 your experience may be degraded point taken.
As I read the OP the issue is with posters who have gone from 78 to say 60 and probably will not have suffered any degradation of service, but come on here as "customers" demanding "what they pay for" when it frankly doesn't matter.
They take up an inordinate amount of time of Plusnet staff and helpfull members. On the other hand a bit of goodwill and humility would benefit everyone  Smiley
