Plusnet internal networking issue

Each time it's raining my internet speed is dropping and there ping time to 2nd host is jumping really high.

Tracerote from my router (195.166.130.248 is my default gateway):

# traceroute www.google.com
traceroute to www.google.com (172.217.169.68), 30 hops max, 38 byte packets
1 195.166.130.248 (195.166.130.248) 6.919 ms 11.452 ms 8.341 ms
2 84.93.253.71 (84.93.253.71) 154.917 ms 84.93.253.67 (84.93.253.67) 89.145 ms 178.098 ms

Sound like internal Plusnet networking issue.

Does anyone experienced something similar ?

If I say this to helpdesk people, they have no clue what I'm talking about Sad

Re: Plusnet internal networking issue

I’d highly doubt it’s a plusnet networking issue if the problem happens when it rains. More likely to be an Openreach infrastructure fault.

Also its normal to see some packet loss when running a traceroute as some servers are going to be prioritising the routing of traffic rather than responding back to your ping requests.

Have you raised a fault at faults.plus.net for further investigation?

Re: Plusnet internal networking issue

I suspect that this is Openreach but IPs belongs to Plusnet range according to whois:

$ whois 195.166.130.248|grep "descr:"
descr: Core Loopback Addresses
descr: PlusNet plc.
descr: PlusNet plc.
$ whois 84.93.253.71|grep "descr:"
descr: Core Infrastructure
descr: PlusNet plc.

I don't think that these are servers responding. Mostly are routers (interfaces in routers) as I referring to time between 1st and 2nd hop.

When is not raining all works as expected:

root@router:~# traceroute www.google.com
traceroute to www.google.com (216.58.212.196), 30 hops max, 38 byte packets
1 195.166.130.248 (195.166.130.248) 7.849 ms 6.246 ms 7.757 ms
2 84.93.253.71 (84.93.253.71) 7.943 ms 7.590 ms 84.93.253.67 (84.93.253.67) 8.584 ms
3 core1-BE1.colindale.ukcore.bt.net (195.99.125.132) 7.623 ms 195.99.125.144 (195.99.125.144) 8.401 ms core1-BE1.colindale.ukcore.bt.net (195.99.125.132) 9.120 ms
4 peer2-et3-1-4.slough.ukcore.bt.net (62.172.103.220) 26.280 ms 14.833 ms 194.72.16.74 (194.72.16.74) 35.301 ms
5 peer5-te0-0-0-32.telehouse.ukcore.bt.net (195.99.126.77) 8.542 ms 8.669 ms 109.159.253.185 (109.159.253.185) 9.810 ms
6^C

Linux traceroute don't use ICMP ....
There is packet loss as well when I ping 2nd hop. 1st hop which is my DG is not pingable, 2nd is and for 10 pings usually 2 are lost.

Re: Plusnet internal networking issue

Yeah the IPs belong to Plusnet but rain will have no effect on Plusnet’s network equipment because I imagine it’s nowhere near where you live. Smiley

Re: Plusnet internal networking issue

I will wait for next rain and open ticket with Plusnet.

Most of my traffic when I work is text terminal sessions so I don't use much bandwidth but rest of family is video/game oriented and this become a issue. During meetings voice/video is starting cracking which is not good as well.
