Plusnet Standard broadband to fibre broadband now slower, delay, freezes etc.

Original Plusnet standard broadband was very good with no internet connection problem and loading speed not terrible, even when busy time. Both iPads and laptops worked at the same time with no connection issue.

End of contract, we just moved onto fibre broadband, and not a good idea.

Both of us using our iPads and laptops makes the connection slow and often the online access stops and displayed as no internet connection (as no Safari server use). Never had that at all on the original standard broadband.

Many internet online items we start a usual access to them but now they pause and don't load fully and sometimes give up on us; as already said, never had that problem before.

Anyone know why fibre broadband is slow and stops?

Changed from original Plusnet router to Hub One. Original router worked with wifi 100%. Hub One does not but is probably not a router issue but the broadband line connection?

It's only been 6 weeks on fibre but no improvement; how long to change to improve?

Any comments on how to sort this really appreciate, thanks

@johnc61

Try separating the 2.4 and 5 GHz bands, see. https://community.plus.net/t5/My-Router/2-4ghz-and-or-5ghz-best-practice/m-p/1351966#M840

Having done this try both bands in turn and use the best.

Re: Plusnet Standard broadband to fibre broadband now slower, delay, freezes etc.

Hi there @johnc61,

Thanks for reaching out to us.

I'm sorry to hear you are having trouble with your connection and I apologise for the frustration caused.

I have checked over the connection and there appears to be no issues present, does this affect all your devices? Have you tried changing the wireless channels? If not, then please follow the steps here.

Thanks.

Thanks for that. I will follow that link and try changing the bands to see what it does. Will update what happens when it is done.

Re: Plusnet Standard broadband to fibre broadband now slower, delay, freezes etc.

Fingers crossed! As explained, 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz were made separate, the 5 GHz SSID name changed.

At that point I then moved half the items we use to one side and the others to the other side and logged in individual due to the name change.

so far, it has improved.

Some still slow moments occasionally but overall all now work at the same time and the previous serious issue of stopped online loading has not happened now.

thank you for the information and will keep this updated

Re: Plusnet Standard broadband to fibre broadband now slower, delay, freezes etc.

Hi @johnc61, thanks for getting back to us and we're happy to hear things looked to have improved. When picking what devices go on what frequency we'd recommend keeping in mind that the 5GHz frequency is designed for close range stationary devices and it's the 2.4GHz which usually does the heavy lifting in getting your signal around the property. By all means if you're looking for further improvements to your wireless then you could look at adjusting your wireless channel (we'd only recommend the 2.4GHz) as this may provide a stronger signal if other routers in the area are operating on the same as yours. I'll include my full wireless improvement guide below which will show you how to log into the router and do this. The App that's mentioned that may help you find the least sued channel I'm afraid is only on the android store however and if it's entirely apple devices you have then I don't think there's an equivalent apple store app and the trial and error method may be best.

The guide below will show you how to log into the router and change the wireless channel as it's usually another router in the area on the same or similar channel that will be causing issues for both wireless frequencies. Before picking a channel I'd suggest downloading a free app called wifi analyzer which will scan your area for all the routers and show what channels they are on between 1-13. Although the above app isn't essential it helps you pick where your router would be best in terms of channels and saves a lot of time doing it via trial and error.

1) To connect to your Hub One, you will need to open a browser and go to 192.168.1.254 If you have any issues doing this via Wireless, we recommend trying to do it via Ethernet cable instead.

2) You should come to a page with information about your connection, click 'Advanced Settings' at the top and it will ask you to sign in with a Password. This is located on the back of your router under 'Admin Password'

3) Select the option for 'Wireless' followed by '5 GHz Wireless'. What we want to do to begin with is turn 'Sync with 2.4 GHz Wireless' to 'Off' and update the SSID to be different. The easiest way would be to add '-5G' to the end so it is identified as its own connection. Once this is changed, we will need to keep an eye on it for a day or 2 to see if the issue continues. If it does, the next step would be to change the wireless channel. Keeping in mind the original 2.4Ghz unchanged name network connection would be the best to connect your devices to for a stronger signal.
(When deciding which device goes on what frequency keep in mind that the 5GHz is designed for close range stationary devices and standard 2.4GHz the one which gets the wireless around your property further.)

4) Following the above guide to get to your 'Advanced Settings' page, you will need to change the settings within the 2.4 GHz Wireless tab and the 5 GHz Wireless tab.

5) Under the correct heading, you will need to find 'Channel Selection' on the list and change this from 'Automatic' to any one of the other channels, This can also need doing under '5 GHz Wireless' to cover both signals. Give it 3-4 hours of testing to see if the issue still persists and try to change the channel again if you see little or no improvement.

Let us know how it goes. -Benj
