Plusnet Safeguard

Hi
Is PlusNet Safeguard 100% online at plusnets end and on our routers?
I thought is was plusnets firewall but just saw this "Switch SafeGuard ON or OFF above and then restart your router to make the change active"
don't see why we are told to restart the router if its PN side
1) is this a true firewall or a DNS database like open DNS
2) has anyone using it seen any slowdown like we get when turning on website redirection in the Address Based Filtering on a Technicolor TG582n FTTC
(I get a massive speed drop when set to on and to block or redirect a website)
3) Can safeguard be used if I use a none plusnet DNS provider

Re: Plusnet Safeguard

PlusNet Safeguard is NOT a firewall; that should be permanently on and provided by your router.
PlusNet Safeguard is not related to DNS
Plusnet Safeguard doesn't really do much - except that it will block websites that have been categorised by somebody(?) as not the kind of place that is suitable for such as you.

Re: Plusnet Safeguard

kk thx
I use a modded hosts file for blocking websites but did see on the safeguard page that you could add your own ip or website that you want blocked like you can in openDNS
I was looking in to safeguard as cant use open because I have my own DNS provider

Can't you do both ?,  are you trying to do something weird like watching region-unlocked Netflix on a PC on which you also use for general web browsing ?

I thought it was, but I could be wrong Huh By switching it on I thought it changed the automatic assignment of the DNS used by the Router Undecided

Re: Plusnet Safeguard

@Anotherone is right. Safeguard is a DNS solution. When activated a different pair of caching DNS resolvers are assigned to your connection (thus the restart) and they're responsible for the blocking.

Re: Plusnet Safeguard

1)It's a DNS based system
2)Speeds have been fine
3)No

There is also a broadband firewall which is a separate to safeguard.
