Plugging in a switch makes my internet disconnect

Hi guys,
Im really hoping this is a simple one.
I have just purchased an 8 port switch which is supposed to just plug into the router and work automatically according to the instructions yet when i plug it in my plusnet router disconnects from the internet giving a red light. Can anyone tell me how i sort this at all please ? I would really appreciate it

Re: Plugging in a switch makes my internet disconnect

Yes sorry i was trying to get the name of it
It is a tplink 8 port 10/100mbps desktop switch
Errors in log are showing
FIREWALL icmp check (1 of 1): Protocol: ICMP Src ip: 45.35.96.242 Dst ip: 146.199.xxx.xxxType: Destination Unreachable Code: Port Unreacheable
If that helps ?

Does your switch have a web based interface? If it does it may well be sharing the same internal IP as your router. I suspect the errors in the log may be down to the fact that the connection has been dropped. Do you have a model number for the switch?

Which port on the TG582 are you plugging the switch in to?

They are not labelled. The far left and the 3rd one from the left. The far right one is for the modem.

Re: Plugging in a switch makes my internet disconnect

It appears to be related to my tp 3 port powerline that's causing the router to disconnect. Ive always used the first port but im now connecting a second port into port 2 thats causing it. Any ideas ?

Re: Plugging in a switch makes my internet disconnect

Try plugging just the switch in to the router and the powerline in to the switch.

Are you saying you have two ports from the powerline into the router and/or switch? If so, that is likely to cause a crash as there is probably a "loop" where routing table requests go from port to port in a recursive loop (LEDs flash rapidly and continuously). More expensive switches have protection for this fault.
