Packet Loss Issue

Hey there, I'm currently unable to do any streaming or online gaming at the moment due to recent internet issues. I've done speed tests and they look completely fine, with low ping and reliable down/up speeds. I think it might be due to packet loss/exceeding TTL. Incidentally, a friend of mine who is also with PlussNet only half a mile away is also describing the same issues with being able to browse the net okay, but unable to game on-line.

Here's a few images of some of the tests I've done. I'll upload a wire shark test if necessary.

Thanks in advance for any help you guys can provide me Smiley

Re: Packet Loss Issue

Hi

The "packet loss" highlighted /ringed in red is not showing packet loss.

It is showing that a router, within PNs network, is not replying to the ping requests.

The router is (correctly) forwarding the packets onto subsequent hops/routers as can be seen by zero packet loss from the destination.

Were the loss to persist beyond that router to all subsequent hops then that would be packet loss.

Regards

Richard

Re: Packet Loss Issue

I see, thanks for the quick reply. I guess I'll try to reset my router/use a different one to see if it makes a difference Smiley

Re: Packet Loss Issue

Changing Your home router will not chnage the behaviour of the "industrial scale" routers used inside PNs data centres.

The PN routers lack of response to a ping will not cause you issues.

My username? On the forums, it's Cameron2310 but I feel like that isn't what you're looking for. The username created when joining plus-net was [Removed] I think but that was for another household member. Smiley

Re: Packet Loss Issue

Ah, thanks for the link. I was also thinking that the 141.hiper04.sheff.dial.plus.net.uk server was the problem from my WinMTR test but, as you said, it's just because the server is prioritizing routing traffic instead of pinging.

Re: Packet Loss Issue

Just did a pingplotter test, and it shows that there's a 30% packetloss from dsldevice.lan. I assume that's my router, as it's the first hop? Could this be the issue?

Re: Packet Loss Issue

Hi

The links worked for me.

Looking at the pingplotter picture it shows a number of intermediate devices/IPs not responding to pings but the packets  are routed to the destination IP which is reporting a 0.6% packet loss.

Looking at the windows tracert to what appears to be a google IP address I cannot see any packet loss.

You could try MTR and see what that reports if you set it ping the BBC

It can be download from http://winmtr.net/

and invoked using mtr www.bbc.co.uk

Richard

If the final IP shows no packet loss then whatever the intermediate steps/IPs report is nothing to worry about.

I'm afraid access to imgur is blocked internally in the office.

@Cameron2310 - Are you able to post the images here in the thread? Thanks.

Re: Packet Loss Issue

Of course. Here's all the screenshots so far of different tests;

Edit; I'm now only getting 20mbps down (was 36) and only 0.05 up (was about 1.5)
