Packet Loss 4pm to 10pm each day

I'm seeing significant packet loss between 4pm and 10pm each day.

3da60e68cd39494289f4011b33aba76f-17-01-2017

MTR seems to suggest that the packet loss is occurring somewhere in the PN-BT infrastructure.

I raised a ticket and the problem went away but then came back, but BT closed the ticket even though I said I still had tbe problem.

I was wondering if anyone else has been experiencing this.

Re: Packet Loss 4pm to 10pm each day

I'm on a fixed IP (had it for several years) and currently connecting through pcn-bng01

I'm hoping to get home when things are really bad and grab some MTR data.. if I leave it running all day the % loss it reports is just about zero

Re: Packet Loss 4pm to 10pm each day

The second one is bad.

If the packetloss to the last hop is ok you can largely ignore the middle hops as routers drop icmp in favour of doing real work, but they are useful as your last mtr shows the same loss through the whole route so is indicating a problem around router to pcn-bng01

When this happens disconnect and go to a 2nd gateway and if still the same probably a hot svlan congestion. If totally clear a good indicator to pn to look at the ip you had and the route it would take through bng01

Re: Packet Loss 4pm to 10pm each day

Also with connecting to btw Speedtest domain on the network and ping their Speedtester to see if that has packet loss too

Re: Packet Loss 4pm to 10pm each day

As I'm on call and all I've got now is packet loss and nothing else I'm loathed to try anything in case I end up back with lousy throughput

Re: Packet Loss 4pm to 10pm each day

The packet loss could be occurring anywhere beyond the router - including over the VDSL2 link between modem and FTTC cabinet. It could be congestion, or it could be REIN, but we don't have any DSL stats so it's not easy to tell which of those the problem might be.

I think congestion would likely show up as higher latencies maybe with some packet loss, but your ping monitor graphs have packet loss without any increase in latency at those times.

It might be worth seeing if the packet loss is worse for larger packets, using Windows commands such as:

ping -n 50 -l 32 pingbox1.thinkbroadband.com

ping -n 50 -l 1400 pingbox1.thinkbroadband.com

Larger packets are more likely to be hit by REIN than smaller packets.

Re: Packet Loss 4pm to 10pm each day

I suspect its a mix of multiple things - I suspect the 13 year old copper cable to the pole is probably suffering as its a very long run and sags under its own weight. But the packet loss has a distinct pattern which suggests problems else where as well.

Ping with a 1400 bytes packet shows no problems:

--- pingbox1.thinkbroadband.com ping statistics ---
1001 packets transmitted, 1001 received, 0% packet loss, time 999683ms
rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 13.651/14.464/41.378/1.388 ms

Re: Packet Loss 4pm to 10pm each day

If it was contention caused by something being too busy then I would have thought that it would show a different pattern on Saturday and Sunday.... but it doesn't.

If it was something in my house then it seems odd that it starts before I get home from work, and again if it was something like the central heating then I'd expect to see it in the morning too, as well as more frequently over the weekend..

That's why I was wondering if anyone else was seeing it - in case its something odd in PNs inftrastructure.....
