PNH1 - 172.16.0.1 - default gateway.....?

Is there some firmware/configuration trickery going on, or have I missed something?

When using the hubs default IP of 192.168.1.254 I'm sure the default gateway is also 192.168.1.254 (y/n)?

But currently I'm using the other IP range of 172.16.0.1 but the gateway is showing as 172.16.17.7.

I know it doesn't have to be the same, but wouldn't have thought a basic router would select a different default gateway....?

The default gateway for computers connected locally to your router is the LAN IP address of the router.

The router's gateway is the other end of its PPP connection. On Plusnet's new network, these use IP addresses in the range 172.16.0.0 - 172.31.255.255. Which happens to be the same range you've chosen to use for your LAN.

Re: PNH1 - 172.16.0.1 - default gateway.....?

Thanks for that. I was thinking that because my routers IP (172.16.0.1) is in use, my default gateway would have been the same. (must be having one of those moments!! but at least you've explained why)

So if someone is on the H1's default (192.168.1.254) IP setting and they're on the new network, then their default gateway is in the 172.xx.xx.xx range too? - so we/they can tell without them carrying out any other checks.

for example theirs would simply show 192.168.1.254 under the Hub IP Gateway Address -> IP Address, and their TCP/IP settings -> Default gateway would be in the range of 172.16.0.0 - 172.31.255.255 and not 192.168.1.254.

(ignore the DHCP network range, copied that in error)
