Old Sony VAIO laptop connecting to internet problem

Hi,

Just fired up an old Sony VAIO laptop circa 2007 running Windows Vista, all working tickety boo except connecting to the internet. It can see and has connected to to the Plusnet wireless network which is working fine on all other devices. I think it is an issue with the frequency, the laptop only runs on 2.4 GHz but the new router has dual 2.4/5 GHz and I think this is the problem. Any ideas? The router is fairly new 6-12 months old. I presume this is fairly common between new and old technology.

Cheers,

Johny5

PS don't say buy a new laptop!! The Spectrum 48k will be next out the box!

@Johny5

All you need to do is split  the bands so that they are not synchronised, see  https://community.plus.net/t5/My-Router/2-4ghz-and-or-5ghz-best-practice/m-p/1351966#M840

Whether that is your problem is another issue.

I was presented with a laptop of similar vintage last year by a friend to see if it could be pressed onto service. I changed the HDD for a small £18 SSD and installed Linux Mint 19.1 in it's Cinnamon form. This looks very similar to Windows. It runs super smooth and is used for homework.
