From the TBB forum Mr Safron said yesterday
Some other providers have had issues, and suggests there may be some common bit of kit/firmware upgrade/config in core networks thats doing this, but given the majority of speed testers mask the issue people when told to test connection, get good figures

Well Router tells me a new firmware update
Hmm, that's odd, well sort of.....
Unless Mr BT/OR issued a new PNH1 during his/her visit, then iirc only those on a 40/2 are due a 'BobP' applied firmware update, though certain hubs are now auto updating. The other huge upload bug thread mainly affects those on the said speed and only a few (that I've noticed) on 80/20 connections have reported issues with uploading.
Has your firmware changed from version 4.7.5.1.83.8.226?
A quick test with only 2 other devices (mobiles) connected to the hub = http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest/results.html?id=1490771005281757855
edit. D'oh!! (in a Homer J Simpson kinda fashion)
I'd got it in my head you were using a PNH1
Thought I'd try different browsers, rather than just IE (that's only used for TBB tests and BTw tests).....
IE11 - http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest/results.html?id=1490776141712603455
FF52.0.2 - http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest/results.html?id=1490776060777445655
(note the jump in latency when using FF)
Then repeated
IE - http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest/results.html?id=1490776497701939655
FF - http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest/results.html?id=1490776535823077555
(note the impossible speed using FF of 298.8Mbps - the TBB 'speedometer' was actually showing 890.8Mbps for most of this test!!)
Then a third and (for now) final rinse and repeat
IE - http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest/results.html?id=1490776756259702855
FF - http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest/results.html?id=1490776799330581455
(note the flat line and the 50.4Mbps (again impossible on my connection) using FF)

So surprisingly we had a call from PN at 09:55. The guy was calling regarding the erratic nature of these TBB results (mainly) and asked about other issues we've noticed. Fair play to him, he listened to everything i had to say (god, he must have ear ache!!) and confirmed that the TBB x1 issue has not been witnessed by PN.
I'm to find and then blow off the dust from my BTHH5 and swap this for the PNH1 to rule the hub out.
I was going to anyway, but will repeat these TBB tests using another laptop to rule out this laptop being the reason. (iirc I've done this already now that I come to think of it)
I did mention the issue that I and @snadge have regarding this weird 10-15 day PNH1 uptime that causes all devices (with a browser) to become sluggish when surfing the www, including simply waiting for google search to load. The only solutions I've found to restore the connectivity speeds is to either switch the hub off and back on again or to disconnect the hub via the restart function on the hub itself - (not the disconnect/reconnect setting)
I have openly confirmed that should I find the cause and it's of my making, then I'll come (or go) quietly and admit these erratic results are my fault (or words to that effect).
I did confirm that all speed test results across multiple threads were carried out over Ethernet to rule out wifi related issues.
I also confirmed that when using YTube, the content can buffer, or buffer and play some of the content out of focus, or play fine.
(One wonders if I'll ever break my personal record of 90+ days uptime without a single drop when I was with $ky.....)
edit. Mentioned my fellow peers observations when gateway hopping too!!
Plus much more, but can't remember everything I said

@DS wrote:
My lower estimate is 24.1Mbps but the Profile Rate (above, highlighted in bold) is 22.3Mbps, thus below the lower estimate, or am I missing something here?
The estimate is given in "sync speed", so it only makes sense to compare the estimate with the sync speed reported by the modem, not IP Profiles, not speedtest results.

Thanks for pointing that out ejs. I genuinely thought BT and therefore PN accepted the IP profile result given on the BTw speed tester.
Anyway, here's some proof that my connection has been less than the lower estimate:
Upper images and lower left image show the max rate of less than 24.1Mbps, lower right image is just above the lower estimate:
Currently using another laptop to test with, connected via ethernet, running W10 and every possible update has been applied - just in case...
Tested using:
Chrome - http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest/results.html?id=1490805793676797255
Edge - Which surprisingly gives the best result I've seen to date - http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest/results.html?id=1490809152260033355
Firefox - http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest/results.html?id=1490809346469649055

Just a quick, late/early post regarding the 3 browsers tested
The time on the TBB site is 1hr out - maybe one of you guys that use their forum could give Mr Saffron a nudge...
Chrome - http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest/results.html?id=1490838039837082455
Edge - http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest/results.html?id=1490838123734352055
Firefox - http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest/results.html?id=1490838082479267755
This time Edge performed badly...

@30FTTC06 So, it's clear then that the "ramp up" in single threaded speeds isn't a TBB speedtester thing because you can demonstrate it at the same time using iperf3.
Are the iperf3 tests run from the same devices as the tbb speedtests?

What about the actual experience of using the internet after the fix? (ignore the speed results for the minute)

Fix ?
Sorry did I miss something, erm - iperf3 tests are from the router itself. All TBB tests are from my laptop and confirmed with another machine.
Experience this week
Streaming: Fixed
Bogging Down : Fixed
General Browsing: Very Good
Gaming: Very Good
Speed Tests - Single Thread: still the same
But I think some of the above is down to Traffic Shaping at this end as well.
Downstream set at 34675
Upstream set at 1539
