Noise Margin

Afternoon all,

I have been having issues with my line for some time. After having a look around the BT forum they say normal noise margin is 6.0 and anything above may indicate line noise. I have copied my stat from the events page.

( 126.960000) PPPoE is up - Down Rate=40000Kbps, Up Rate=9999Kbps; SNR Margin Down=8.6dB, Up=11.5dB

Also did a quiet line test and there was noise on the line but only feint.

Any honets comments on this and is this acceptable noise margin?

Thanks in advance.

Re: Noise Margin

If you are on a 40/10 service it is absolutely fine. What it is telling you is that the line is capable of going faster but is being limited to 40Mbps. The effect is that you have a very good SNR at 40 Mbps which means that you should get fewer errors and hence maximum throughput.

If you're on an 80/20 service then that's a different case altogether.

Re: Noise Margin

Depends on whether you have any performance problems on your line?

The SNR on its own carries limited information as it is adjusted to maximise the performance of the line.

Which package are you on and what speeds are getting on upload and download.

What does dslchecker.bt. say as the speeds you can expect?

Re: Noise Margin

Hi

I'm on 40-10 package.

BT says this,

Download speedachieved during the test was - 36.87 Mbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speedsis 20 Mbps-36.89 Mbps .
 Additional Information:
IP Profile for your line is - 36.89 Mbps

Thanks for your help guys

Re: Noise Margin

Our tests aren't showing any issues and those stats look OK.

What kind of problems are you experiencing?
