New FTTC connection and high variable ping

New transferee to Plusnet fibre from another ISP's ADSL - I am hoping this is just the line adjusting itself.

BT Wholesale tells me that throughput is OK, mid 30s down and just under 10 up, but ping is 356ms, then 236ms and so on.

I'm using Linux Mint 20 hard connected on an Ethernet LAN, HG612 Gen3 VDSL modem and Asus RT-AC3200 router.  My VPN is off.

Traceroute looks like this:

$ traceroute -w 10 -I google.com
traceroute to google.com (216.58.213.110), 30 hops max, 60 byte packets
1 router.asus.com (192.168.1.3) 3.198 ms 2.983 ms 2.972 ms
2 172.16.16.48 (172.16.16.48) 9.453 ms 9.443 ms 9.434 ms
3 * * *
4 136.hiper04.sheff.dial.plus.net.uk (195.166.143.136) 17.446 ms 17.438 ms 17.429 ms
5 195.99.125.134 (195.99.125.134) 17.417 ms 17.220 ms 17.214 ms
6 peer8-et-7-0-5.telehouse.ukcore.bt.net (62.172.103.178) 28.839 ms 29.391 ms 29.377 ms
7 109.159.253.237 (109.159.253.237) 21.714 ms 18.825 ms 18.798 ms
8 72.14.232.76 (72.14.232.76) 20.587 ms 20.338 ms 20.324 ms
9 216.239.57.121 (216.239.57.121) 17.814 ms 17.803 ms 17.791 ms
10 lhr25s02-in-f14.1e100.net (216.58.213.110) 18.834 ms 18.823 ms 18.812 ms

I must have missed something here, but can't work out what it might be.

Re: New FTTC connection and high variable ping

Latency now 40ms, 53 ms, 38ms on 3 successive tests, down and up same.  Dunno what someone did, but it worked - thanks.

Re: New FTTC connection and high variable ping

Fix

Traceroute looks fine to my eye. Some hops will time out and that’s normal, it’d just be those particular ones prioritising traffic rather than responding back to the ping request.

The BTW speed tester is known for providing unreliable results occasionally, although the same may be said for some others.

Run a speed test at thinkbroadband.com/speedtest if the high latency returns. Also set up a think broadband quality monitor, from the same site.
