New 76Mb fibre, but only getting 38?

Just had 76Mb fibre installed.  After waiting 5 hours it's finally up and running.
The speed is only 38Mbps down but 20 up.
It's supposed to be 76 down.
The exchange is showing 76 available, and the BT engineer confirmed his readings were 80/20 after install of the bt modem.
Will the speed increase over the next few days or could their be a problem?
Speeds taken via ookla app, stood next to wireless router. (I still have Virgin fibre connected and it gives 100Mb via the wireless app)

I assume that this says 40 for current line speed https://portal.plus.net/my.html?action=data_transfer_speed

Sorry to hear that the speeds are slow.
Everything looks okay on our end and your on the correct profile.
Is it possible to try a wired connection to see if you get the same results?

Re: New 76Mb fibre, but only getting 38?

How far by wire length are you from the BT cabinet?
My wire length is 1Km and I've been told by OR engineer that at this length of wire will give same speed on 76Mb as 38Mb, so would be a waste of money to be on the faster service.
I believe the cut of point of improvement is half my wire length.
Virgin have a cabinet in every street round me but BT few and far between..

The key is in the  "but 20 up." if you was 1km away, you would not be getting 20 up! @t0nyw1ls0n wired or wireless ?

It'll be the wireless. Try a wired connection.

Re: New 76Mb fibre, but only getting 38?

I'm about 250yds from the cabinet!
I'll try wired later today but I'm struggling to see how it can be the wireless connection test at fault because I still have my Virgin bband and standing in the same place in the room Virgin gives 100Mb ( if tried at 6am or midnight-rest of the time it's anything down to 6, yes...6Mbps hence the change to Plusnet for some reliability in performance  Smiley ).
I'll feedback later.
What I will say is that Plusnet speeds over the last 2 days have been rock solid around 36-38Mpbs, hopefully wired will give the 76Mpbs.
The Virgin cabinet is outside my house and yet they can't provide a steady state high download speed, which in my opinion is not good enough. If i pay for a 100Mbps speed I would expect a reasonably steady speed near to 100 Mpbs, say in the 80s and above, not 6Mbps!
...and the house is brand new and came pre-installed with Virgin media hook up points on the wall.

Re: New 76Mb fibre, but only getting 38?

Now changed from the PlusNet router, to a D-Link DIR-868L connected to the BT Modem exactly the same as the plusnet router was.  Ran a wireless test and speed is up around 55Mbps.  Wired connection gives 70+Mbps.
The root cause of poor performance? The plusnet supplied Router which was working at half the achievable rate.
Any comments PlusNet...? Undecided

Re: New 76Mb fibre, but only getting 38?

The Plusnet router isn't the best at Wireless - adequate but not brilliant. I tend to get around 30-50Mb speed tests from my wireless while wired will give me the full rate.
I'm also in quite a congested wifi area so that doesn't help.

Re: New 76Mb fibre, but only getting 38?

Wireless is for convenience, ethernet is for performance, you make your choice.
Or you can invest in a high end router that has good AC connectivity and get the best of both worlds.
Dont expect quality router's from isp's.
The wireless performance you got is good enough for netflix etc. but if you want full speed downloads then you need to change something your side.
