Re: My Ping and I

I will let you know what gateway I am connected to when I get back from work.

I tried setting up the quality monitor but was just getting full red results so I started reading into the plethora of things that could cause that result and realised the tool (and website) is about as user friendly as sandpaper toilet roll.

I will look at it again when I get chance

Re: My Ping and I

No worries, let us know how it goes.

With regards to the quality monitor I believe you'll get full red results if the router blocks ICMP. A workaround is to place a device into the DMZ via the router interface at 192.168.1.254 then set up the monitor to ping that although that'll leave the device exposed to the world wide web so if you go down this path I'd use a really basic device. Having said that this would be at your own risk. Sad

Re: My Ping and I

I've never used the BQM, but others put something dumb into the DMZ

Suggested devices are Now TV pucks or Blueray players.

(The device need to be pingable on the www and I wouldn't use anything that holds your personal data)

Re: My Ping and I

Umm if I'm exposing my device (that needs to be cables to router to test) the only device I have is my pc, all other devices are wireless. If I have avast or other similar software would it need adding to a DMZ on that software too?

Re: My Ping and I

I really wouldn't consider putting your PC in to DMZ

As I've never used BQM, I have no idea if putting a wifi device would work or not

(not even sure if a (for example) wifi speaker would be pingable either)

We could do with someone in the know to answer that (or advise on what device to use)

I can't answer about AV settings either, but like I've suggested, I wouldn't want my PC out there all exposed.

Anyone?

Re: My Ping and I

As requested, I followed the link to identify the gateway. This seems to have failed? please see attached

Re: My Ping and I

fwiw

I get a similar result, though mine identifies my gateway as shown (apart from the <redacted> bit)

Your IP address seems not to be from a Plusnet brand, hence we cannot detect your gateway.

If this is not correct posting the first three octets of your IP address (213.31.<redacted>.*) as a reply to the Gateway Checker Issues

This is mentioned elsewhere on the forums, probably around a week or so ago...?

I have no answer for why yours is like that, wished I did!

Re: My Ping and I

@Gandalf So what does this mean?

Does it identify I'm on a bad gateway? Is that a thing? lol

I'd rather bottom this out before I look into having to expose my pc to the internet as that is the only option I have. Luckily as it's been recently formatted there is very little on there so worst case I can re-format the drive but would rather avoid that if this gateway check tells us something useful..

Re: My Ping and I

@jbligh87, ah I think I see the issue. You've not been on a static IP address for the past 12 days. The gateway checker generally won't work anymore with a dynamic IP as they're not routed through our Broadband Network Gateways.

Sorry I sent my previous reply on 13/05/2019 while I was at home and incorrectly assumed you had a static IP still.

I've re-added the static IP on now, please could you reboot your router when you next get a chance and rerun the traceroutes to pingbox1.thinkbroadband.com as well as the gateway checker?

@Siledag and @gdaviez, are you able to run a traceroute to the above server? I've also added a static IP on for you both just to rule or confirm things, when you next get a chance can you reboot your router letting me know how it goes please?

Re: My Ping and I

<insert a confused look here>

But @Gandalf the tracert results Joe posted were showing as being on a static IP?

Is it possible he was, but the system said no?

Anyway, at least he is now Smiley

(but he was before, so could the previous static IP have been blacklisted (or similar)).

My brain hurts!!Crazy

Re: My Ping and I

I'm hoping that tracert was over wifi @gdaviez?

Are you using a Plusnet Hub One and do you use a separate Openreach modem?

You appear to already have a static IP?

The reasons are:

  • You're getting 4ms from the device to the router
  • dsldevice.lan - should be showing as pnhub1 (or PNHUB1 is you set your own DNS), though if you're using a separate modem then this might be why is shows as dsldevice.lan
  • hop 2 shows you have a static, as did Joe's but he supposedly didn't have a static IPHuh

The only time I saw dsldevice.lan was when either I disconnected the router from the Plusnet network or when I had a blip with the auto authentication to the network.

fwiw, if you have a dynamic IP then I'd expect hop2 to not give any results

Re: My Ping and I

I use a powerline adapter, have tried wired but get the exact same results, been using powerline adapters for months and months before this recent problem occurred and it ran just as well as wired...

Im using the plusnet hub and im pretty sure they just switched me to a static IP tonight
