Re: My Ping and I

We used to run PLA's from our main router to another router, then via ethernet (from the 2nd router) to my sons gaming rig.

But found the PLA's could introduce some small latency as you're seeing (your hop 1 being only 4ms). It now connects via a CAT7 cable (instead of the PLA's) and it runs consistently less than 1ms via my hub6, so it might be worth keeping an eye on the first hop. More so if each of your PLAs are on different floors of your home?

You shouldn't be seeing anything higher than 1ms if you're running direct with a cable. I was actually able to prove that both of my hub1's were introducing some latency. What I found more interesting was after each router had a software update the latency became worse (I've never mentioned this on the forums before as nobody else has mentioned it). However, since moving to a hub6 we've reduced the latency by roughly 8ms on some hops. We normally now only see a max of 12ms but do often see some oddities whilst using the pingbox1 site. I've chalked that one up as being an issue at TBB's end.

So, I would guess to say your hub1 could also be introducing some of the latency, more so if the software ends in 263...?

(like you've mentioned, it used to be fine and it is a possibility the router update has caused something to go wrong, as it did with us)

As you're only using the hub1 (as you haven't mentioned a separate modem) then I really think Plusnet need to look at why your first hop is dsldevice.lan - it should, imo, be showing pnhub1. I've spotted the same with another user but Plusnet didn't comment on this.

I can confirm that when using my H1, the first hop would be pnhub1 or PNHUB1 if I set my own DNS and the same happens for my hub6 - so bthub6 or BTHUB6.

I really do think yours needs further consideration from Plusnet, so why does it yours shows as dsldevice.lan?

Re: My Ping and I

Shocked

Does it say plusnet hub one on the label on the router?

Normally, simply logging in to the router http://192.168.1.254 and going to the bottom of any page will show the software version and the date it was installed.

You could, as long as any sensitive info is hidden, post a picture of the UI (user interface), just in case it is a hub one and the page has changed...... very odd indeed?

Re: My Ping and I

@Gandalf  sorry didnt add ping trace results, see below/attached.

Which gateway

You are currently connected to gateway ptw-ag01.

This is located in Telehouse West.

Seems to be a common theme between all the people struggling

Re: My Ping and I

@jbligh87 makes a valid point, but you were both on dynamic IP's when you first had the issue Undecided

When you move to a static IP your connection is routed differently, hence you see results for hop2

If both of you are on an 82.xx.xx.xx IP then maybe it is something to do with the static IP's (though I doubt it).

If Joe was still using a hub 1 (and it was running software 263) then this would be a common factor. It might be the router in @gdaviez's case, but we need to exhaust all other possibilities first (yes I mentioned the software, but only because of what seems to be common for the issues I observed when I was using either of mine)

The timing of the issue starting and the software update is something that needs to be on the hit list too - maybe it is the router (but Joe should have benefited by now as he (like I) is using a hub 6)

I'm at a loss as to why hop3 (on the first tracert) is jumping and then settles on the other two tracerts - hop 7 on the top two are how I sometimes see them, though yours are still higher than mine.

This is an odd one for sureCrazy3

Re: My Ping and I

@Gandalf any chance we can have your thoughts on these gateways?

Re: My Ping and I

@jbligh87 Sorry for the delayed response, I've been discussing this with a few colleagues today trying to find some similarities and spot any potential trends. I'm still looking into this and I'll update you again tomorrow.

@gdaviez, apart from the high latency you're seeing on a traceroute what real world issues are you experiencing? Buffering while streaming or lag while gaming etc? What games and/or streaming services do you have issues with?

Thanks for getting back to me.

Do you mind me asking which games you play?

Re: My Ping and I

Thanks for waiting Joe.

Discussing this with @Kelly as you're having issues with both a dynamic IP, static IP and have had a DSLAM move I'm advised that it's not going to be anything related to our network. I've reached out to a team of experienced fault specialists within Wholesale to investigate further and they're looking into this.

I'll let you know as soon as I get an email reply back.

Re: My Ping and I

I seem to be having the exact same issue with my new connection. After similar issues at my previous residence (also with plusnet) I picked up a VR900 router and a set of PLA's that halfway remedied the issue but not here.

Download speeds are fantastic and ping is fine while gaming and only gaming but if I load up any kind of video streaming service, even in the lowest quality, or even a few gifs on twitter, whoever is playing will experience intermittent spikes in ping making it impossible to play.

Games played: Everything from CS:GO, Quake to WoW, everything lags. Problem being the Mrs is a professional gamer practising all the time which means I have superfast broadband that I can't use to watch 240p videos much of the time Embarrassed
