Moving to house that has a phone socket in every room

My phone/broadband service will soon be moved to a modern house that has phone sockets in every room but has never had a BT connection and has only ever had a Virgin service. Is any particular socket considered to be the master socket or can that be decided on the day?
Thanks
Dave

Re: Moving to house that has a phone socket in every room

The first question is whether there is actually a BT supply/connection to the house as the sockets may all be for Virgin

No, a BT line is going to be installed. The sockets were clearly installed when the house was built.

In which case the new line will have a new master socket and how you connect it it to the present cabling is up to you

I took another look and there are two NTE5 master sockets side by side - one Virgin and one BT.
I have no idea what the implications of that are.

If you remove the lower section of both you can see which one has the wiring to the extension sockets connected?  Assuming it's the Virgin one, will it be possible to remove the wiring from this socket and feed it into the BT one so that the extensions can be connected to the BT line?

I guess so. I'll ask the BT engineer to do it first!

Is it a recent new build? Possible you may have an external NTE.

Where are you intending to plug in the router/modem, the master socket or elsewhere?

Re: Moving to house that has a phone socket in every room

Thanks both. The house was finished in 2002, which from a web search would seem to predate the External NTE epoch, and there are definitely two NTE5 sockets inside, in a small room on the first floor, which is where I would probably want to place the modem and router but would an extension kit to the living room give me flexibility on placement?
