Lots of errors in modem stats

Hi,
I've had quite a few problems with my broadband recently. I was put onto the 40/20 service for some reason, then the modem starting syncing at 10Mbps Down and 8Mbps Up. Plusnet decided this was a line fault and a few days later an Openreach engineer turned up but couldn't find anything wrong.
I seem to be getting lots of errors, here are the stats:

Re: Lots of errors in modem stats

You have a high number of errors on the line and I think DLM has put a high level of interleaving on because of this (1543 on the downstream).
You don't have G.Inp enabled so you likely are either on an ECI cab, or a Huawei cab with an ECI modem.
Having said that, your attainable rates are very good, and your actual rates whilst good, are a bit below the attainable.
If you use a program like HG612 Modem Stats, or DSL Stats, and monitor the graph of corrected FECs, you can try and see if the noise is constant, or comes in bursts. You can then try and correlate it with electrical equipment in your house (If the noise comes in spikes, does it coincide with an electrical appliance, timeswitch, heating controller etc). If it is constant, try turning things off and see if it disappears.
If you use power line networking adapters, try switching those off first.
Best of luck.

Re: Lots of errors in modem stats

I have an unlocked HG612, no powerline adapters. I don't know the make of my cabinet. The noise doesn't seem to follow much of a pattern at all.

Re: Lots of errors in modem stats

The noise does seem fairly constant.
I would try turning electrical equipment off and see if it makes a difference.
There are lots of instances where something as simple as a laptop power supply was causing horrendous noise.
The noise could be external, but I would think it is more likely to be internal (to your property). Turning off electrical items is a good exercise to work out what is causing the problem.
By way of comparison, my FEC error graph generally sits below 100, although there are very occasional spikes up in the thousands. I am currently working to find out what causes that.
Also check the overnight graph, as more equipment is switched off at that time.

Re: Lots of errors in modem stats

I don't see a problem with those stats, we all can't have perfect lines.
A sync speed of 64Mbps down and 11.6Mbps up -- better than most.
Uptime:  30 hours
ES/hour:  44.5 ( downstream)  -- not high enough to offend the DLM.
Interleaving depth: 1543 down  427 up -- on the high side but needed to correct errors.
delay:        8.00 down        6.00 up -- this will add >16ms of latency
FEC:        186095437 down      2675688 up -- corrected errors, be thankful they are corrected.
As previously said, your BT cabinet is not using the new impulse noise protection (G.INP). Once that gets rolled out to ECI cabinet thing's should be greatly improved (IMO), mainly the +16ms of latency should disappear along with the FEC corrected errors and the errored seconds.
If that was my connection stats I would be very positive about them and for the prospects.

Would impulse noise protection help when it looks like the background noise is constant on my graphs?
I seem to be experiencing one disconnection (PPP session) per day, which wasn't happening before this recent run of problems. I will try turning everything off in the house except the modem and router and then run the laptop off the battery to get the stats and see if that changes anything.
EDIT: Will I have to do upgrade the firmware on the unlocked HG612 when G.INP is implemented?

Re: Lots of errors in modem stats

G.INP is too new for us to be sure about the benefits for individual line issues but from the stats we're seeing posted on various forums I'm certainly hopeful it will greatly improve my broadband issues which are not unlike yours (only with much less speed  Undecided ). Just have to wait for BT to get their finger out with ECI cab's.
For me, the claim of constant background noise is reading too much into that FEC graph.
Are you sure you're getting dropped ppp without getting a vdsl resync?
Does the modems log show anything?
The Huawei modem HG612 running unlocked firmware V100R001C01B030SP08 is reported to be G.INP ready.
If you wish to reduce the interleaving depth and reduce some of the error you're so concerned about you can do that by sacrificing a bit of speed. The maximum sync speed (maxDataRate) can be configured via telnet on a unlocked HG612 modem -- reduced sync gives less errors.  Cool

Re: Lots of errors in modem stats

DSL uptime is currently 2 days 7 hours, my router has a new WAN IP and I've changed gateway. My modem is currently running software version: V100R001C01B028SP10

Re: Lots of errors in modem stats

I'm not sure if the HG612 reports the DSL uptime correctly, some modem / routers don't, they report uptime as dsl uptime -- not the same thing.
If you've got access to the modems GUI the log file will report any resyncs.
Don't know if that unlocked firmware is G.INP ready.
We've assumed you're on a ECI cab could it be it's the firmware preventing you getting G.INP.  Undecided

No. It's not compatible.
If it hasn't been set to block remote updates, the firmware/software should be auto-updated if connected to a Huawei cabinet DSLAM.
However, it appears that further Huawei DSLAM updates to G.INP may have been temporarily suspended until the ECI DSLAM/modems issue has been resolved.

I am connected to an updated Huawei DSLAM.
Just as a test for an unrelated purpose, I reverted to version: V100R001C01B028SP10.
G.INP was immediately disabled, Interleaving was applied at a depth of almost 300, sync speed was reduced etc............................
Reinstalling V100R001C01B030SP08 immediately restored G.INP & the connection stats & sync speed etc. inmproved again.

Re: Lots of errors in modem stats

Well that's made a bit of a difference, fewer errors and decent gain in speed, especially upload, and the latency is much improved.

Yes, for anyone that's interested I installed:
bcm96368MVWG_fs_kernel_HG612V100R001C01B030SP08_webgui
I wonder if having an incompatible firmware caused any extra problems, or do you think that all the benefit comes from G.INP?

Re: Lots of errors in modem stats

It may be G.INP caused some issues with firmware which is not compatible, but if you hadn't unlocked the modem there wouldn't have been a problem.
I'm sure there's a overall benefit though.
