Line Stats (Straight Answer)

I've done some research about my line stats but i'm a little confused because i get different answers to the same question.

Here Are My Stats For Fibre Plus 80/20

Line Attenuation Down - 18.7

Line Attenuation Up - 22.3

SNR Down - 6.0

SNR Up - 6.0

Line Profile Speed Down - 51.75

Line Profile Speed Up - 20.00

Line Sync Down - 49.91

Line Sync Up - 9.59

So the short of it is my download speed is 50 and upload is 10 ?

I've been told this is rubbish and there's a problem with my connection ?

Can anyone confirm this is bad or normal.

Thanks.

Liam.

Re: Line Stats (Straight Answer)

where did you get the line profile speed down from as the BT IP Profile should be less than the sync speed

Re: Line Stats (Straight Answer)

If they are your best speeds, they are similar to my own on 80/20. I used to be on 40/20 becuase I could not get faster than 40 Down (distance from cabinet), but Down improved after many months (G.INP?). My up speeds were often 15-17Mbps which surprised me. Having returned to 80/20 about two months ago, my Up speed has reduced to 10Mbps and seems fixed there.

I can't help but be reminded that BTO have a 55/10 package now that isn't being offered by PlusNet, although it is being applied to 40/20 legacy customers becuase they are on cut down 80/20 service and the 55/10 is cheaper to buy. If I were PlusNet, I'd make 55/10 the standard package, and 40/2 a cheapie basic with 80/20 for those who want the best (and can get it, which rules out many in sparse cabinet areas).

My line profile down speed is my BRAS Down speed and is higher that my sync speed which is correct not the other way round as you have suggested ?

Re: Line Stats (Straight Answer)

Can you post your line stats as I have please so I can compare to mine as "D/U speeds are governed by LA/SNR

Thanks.

No it isn't

http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/IPprofile.htm

Your IP profile is related to the BT wholesale bRAS profile and is an indication of the maximum throughput speed your line can attain whilst that particular profile is in place.

The IP profile is a limit put in place calculated from your sync speed, minus an allowance for various protocol overheads. The profile is applied at the BT bRAS to restrict the downstream data traffic speed on the backhaul between the bRAS and DSLAM.

IP profile stands for Internet Protocol profile and should be a guide to the maximum speeds you see when performing a speed test.

For users on a 21CN exchange, the IP profile is calculated as 88.2% of your sync speed.
For FTTC/VDSL2 it is calculated as ~ 96.8% of your sync speed.

Looking at your latest post I have to ask which router you are using as the router can't report the BT IP Profile as it doesn't know it

Look up "IP Profile" this is set by your ISP and is your line profile

Also known as "BRAS Profile"

Re: Line Stats (Straight Answer)

Oldjim is correct, the sync speed should always be higher than the IP profile and the IP profile is worked out as a percentage based on the sync speed.

Re: Line Stats (Straight Answer)

I'm not disputing my IP profile is based from sync speed but how can your sync speed be more than your IP Profile

if you look at my stats my IP Profile set by DLM is 54.88 and I am syncing at 53.15 so as my line becomes more stable DLM will increase my IP Profile and I will re-sync at a higher rate so if my IP Profile is ie. 60.00 I should sync at 96.69% of my max thoughput being 60.00 giving me a sync speed of 58.17 in theory however this is not real world figures.

54.88*96.69% = 53.063 (Real World Figure 53.15)

60.00*96.69% = 58.176

This is a screen grab of my latest test.

IP Profile for my line is  - 54.88

Download Sync Speed - 53.19

You can't sync faster that your profile line speed unless DLM increases your IP profile

Re: Line Stats (Straight Answer)

The speedtester results are not the modem's "sync speed", you would find the sync speed (also known as the line rate or bandwidth) in the same place as you found the attenuation and SNR figures.

Re: Line Stats (Straight Answer)

Thanks, yes I realise, I'm syncing about 58mbps but have no hope of achieving that speed over the distance, it seems a ridiculously high figure. This afternoon the BTW performance Test returned to similar speeds as Ookla, nothing has changed at my end, as far as I know, but something must have on the Internet.

Re: Line Stats (Straight Answer)

Ok I think we are all getting our wires crossed here' probably my fault because of the way I worded my stats.

Here's an update properly worded.

IP Profile - 54.88Mbps

Download speed - 53.16Mbps

Upload Speed - 11.3Mbps

Line Attenuation Down - 18.70db

Line Attenuation Up - 22.10db

SNR Down - 6.0db

SNR Up - 6.0db

Modem Sync Speed Down - 56.70Mbps

Modem Sync Speed Up - 19.95Mbps

Going back to my original question is 53Mbps a bit low on a 76Mbps connection and 11Mbps low for a 20Mbps connection when my LA is extremely good and SNR is bang on 6db which is more than adequate to achieve higher speeds ?

Re: Line Stats (Straight Answer)

I'm not sure if your line attenuation could be considered extremely good. What does the BT Broadband Availability Checker give for your estimated speeds, which are the simplest things to compare you actual speeds to?

What speed you can get mostly depends on how far away from your cabinet you are, although other things like internal wiring issues can reduce your speed. 50 Mbps is better than what many people can get, but not as good as what others can get, depending on how far from their cabinet they are.

Re: Line Stats (Straight Answer)

Fix

Now that we are on the same wavelength - going back to the original question

With a noise margin of 6dB your line is doing as well as it can and the attenuation of 18.7dB would tend to show that this is about what you can expect (I can't find any reliable attenuation / speed tables) but if you can estimate your distance to the cab this may help

FTTC-speed-distance-graph

Regarding noise margin - with FTTC the default is 6dB and as far as I am aware (unlike ADSL2) it never gets reduced
