Latency spikes

About a week ago or two ago the internet disconnected and reconnected with a 146.198.214.xxx ip. Ever since I've been getting latency spikes while someone is streaming a youtube video or watching a twitch stream but, When the connection is fully saturated the latency doesn't spike.

The speed has also dropped from around 72 to around 64 despite the sync speed remaining the same.

I've tested this on 2 computers both on ethernet.

Re: Latency spikes

Hi @grantmdh

I've had a check of the connection and there might something out of place somewhere as we can see some disconnections on the line as shown on the image below even though it has improved in the last couple of days:

There were also some errors detected when testing the line which might be causing the issue you are having. Although our tests aren't picking up exactly what's causing the issue so we will have to do some troubleshooting to start ruling things out.

I'd recommend starting with basic checks here

And if that doesn't help the next thing would be to rule your internal wiring out by plugging the connection into your test socket which is under the faceplate of your master socket and seeing if the drops stop. This rules out internal wiring, face plates and extension sockets as being the cause. How to locate the test socket and set your connection into it can be found here

Please let us know how it goes once you've followed the above steps.

Re: Latency spikes

@Beyhive Those disconnections were me in the hopes of it giving me an IP that wasn't 146.198.214.xxx but it looped back around after 26 IPs all of them being 146.198.214.xxx. I don't know if it's just a coincidence but the connection had been fine since day 1 until it assigned a 146.198.214.xxx IP.

Re: Latency spikes

Thanks for getting back to us.

Dynamic IPs are assigned from a small pool which are specific to your location so the odds are you'll get very similar ones. If you can switch your router off overnight then back on in the morning, you should hopefully pick up a different range.

Let us know how this goes as I'd be interested to know if this resolves the issue or doesn't either way.

Re: Latency spikes

I turned the router off both Sunday and Monday night. It hasn't assigned a new ip range

Re: Latency spikes

Hi @grantmdh,

When you're noticing latency spikes, is there any particular combination of what's in use alongside YouTube/Twitch being streamed? For example, are there any downloads going on, or online games being played? Inversely, are you streaming something or uploading files yourself?

Re: Latency spikes

No, I've tried disabling wi-fi and only having my computer connected, checked for any background applications. Latency doesn't spike when nothing is streaming but as soon as I put a twitch stream on it'll start spiking.

Re: Latency spikes

Thanks for your post @grantmdh.

To try and bump the IP over to a different range and hopefully get rid of the latency, I have just added a Static IP to the line.

This is usually a chargeable component but as we're looking into it as a potential resolution to your issue I've added credit to cover this months cost so that you're not erroneously billed.

Please can you reboot the router so that the Static IP can kick in and let me know when you've done so?

Re: Latency spikes

@OskarPapa

The static IP did change the IP but but latency spikes were still happening. I did notice something whilst doing a speedtest, the download would hang on around 15mbps for a second or two, then gradually make its way up.

Re: Latency spikes

Hi @grantmdh

The next time you experience latency, could you please run a trace route to pingbox1.thinkbroadband.com and post the results here?

Thanks

Dave

Re: Latency spikes

Thanks for the traceroutes.

I've added the Pro Addon to your account to try to prioritise gaming traffic above all others.

As this is normally chargeable I've also added a credit to make sure we don't charge for this.

Can you let us know what your traceroutes look like now while you're streaming?

Re: Latency spikes

@Gandalf

Does it require a router reboot to take effect?

Re: Latency spikes

It shouldn't do, but a reboot probably won't hurt.

Re: Latency spikes

@Gandalf

I've not seen it spike as of yet, I'll leave it pinging pingbox1.thinkbroadband.com for a few hours to see if it starts spiking.

Tracing route to pingbox1.thinkbroadband.com [80.249.99.164]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

1 <1 ms 1 ms <1 ms dsldevice.lan [192.168.1.254]
2 11 ms 11 ms 11 ms vl241.ptw-ag02.plus.net [84.93.253.120]
3 11 ms 11 ms 11 ms 84.93.253.123
4 11 ms 11 ms 12 ms core1-BE1.southbank.ukcore.bt.net [195.99.125.130]
5 12 ms 12 ms 11 ms peer8-et-3-0-2.telehouse.ukcore.bt.net [109.159.252.182]
6 * * * Request timed out.
7 12 ms 12 ms 12 ms po4-31.core-rs2.thdo.ncuk.net [80.249.97.85]
8 11 ms 11 ms 11 ms pingbox1.thinkbroadband.com [80.249.99.164]

Trace complete.
