Issue connecting to sites (DNS?)

Hi,
My plusnet connection (76mb fibre) has been very reliable for a number of months. However, over the past couple of days I have noticed that I appear to have issues connecting to a given URL. Quite often, an attempt to follow a hyperlink will result in a connection time out error in Chrome. in addition, sites with JavaScript or other content loaded from external URLs will only partially load, presumably because the connection to the external content has timed out.
What is strange to me is that my actual broadband speed appears to be fine. I am able to download files at usual rates and a broadband speed check reports 60mb/s download and 20mb/s upload.
I understand that Plusnet had recent DNS problems which are now apparently resolved. I powered down and restarted my modem and router (I am using standard equipment provided by Plusnet) yesterday but this did not help.
I connect directly to the router via patch cable, not over wifi.
Is anyone else having similar issues or can provide any advice?
Thanks

Re: Issue connecting to sites (DNS?)

Yes, I was having exactly the same problems with Ping Plotter showing an inability to go beyond the first Plusnet gateway for some sites.  I disconnected and waited a few minutes then reconnected which gave me a different gateway and all was well again!  Unfortunately I did not take a note of the 'faulty' gateway (I think it was oneof the PCL-xxx ones) but I am now on ptn-ag02 and all is well.  Suggest you try a disconnect for a few minutes which may well give you a 'good' gateway.

Re: Issue connecting to sites (DNS?)

Thanks Rod
I've given it a go.
I saw references to pcl-gw02, pcl-cr02 and ggc02 when doing a tracert on google.com before (in that order).
Following re-connection I now have pcl-bng04 and PCL-CR02.
Unfortunately I still seem to be suffering from slow connection times.
Guess I should give it another go in a while?

Re: Issue connecting to sites (DNS?)

Hi Rick,
Looks as if all the PCL gateways have a problem and I understand these are situated in a different bulding to the pt(x) ones which are all in one of the telehouses in Canary Wharf.  I think the PCL ones are elsewhere in the city of London.  I would try a repeated disconnect and reconnect until a ping request shows a pt(x) or thn one which are all in the telehouse.  Certainly worked here when the pcl one was unresponsive to several sites. This has more info as to their location: http://www.kitz.co.uk/isp/pnPipes.htm

Re: Issue connecting to sites (DNS?)

Tried this a few times, still ending up on the bad gateways and these connection time outs are getting worse... I guess I will have to raise a fault with Plusnet.

Re: Issue connecting to sites (DNS?)

Confirmed there is an issue, got the comments below from Melissa at Plusnet:
Right from what I can see you were connected to a bad one, you are still connected to one that has some issues. So could you please restart the router again.
and
Our development teams will be working with BT on this one

Re: Issue connecting to sites (DNS?)

A couple of weeks on, I am still struggling with this issue. I have restarted my router on numerous occasions. Sometimes my ability to connect to sites is slightly better, at others it is very frustrating.
Since this is a gateway issue, there must surely be others affected. Is anyone else having these problems?

You are not alone no, even when I tried submitting my originally reply you guessed it the page timed out. It is hugely frustrating having pages timeout constantly. Trace routes aren't good either!

Re: Issue connecting to sites (DNS?)

@robunknownuser
If all your traceroutes look like that, there may be something about the software on your computer, or your router, that blocks the packets needed for the traceroute.
The 582n causes traceroutes done using TCP to not work, although that won't be the exact issue with yours, it shows that sort of thing does happen.

Re: Issue connecting to sites (DNS?)

Yes my mistake I forgot to relax my ACL's... Look's like I'm on gateway pcl-ag06 not sure which the OP is using though?

I've reset my modem numerous times to try and get allocated onto a functional gateway, but I always seem to end up on a knackered one.

Re: Issue connecting to sites (DNS?)

Exactly the same problem here for about the last two or three days. Latest reboot seems to have gained me a usable connection again for the time being... I haven't seen this go out in the official plusnet fault email circular, does anyone know if this is officially being looked into?

Re: Issue connecting to sites (DNS?)

I spoke too soon! Had to reboot again and this time I'm not picking up an IP at all - have had this before and it turned out to be a faulty gateway so am currently waiting on the phone to get it reset...

My latency is dire compared to yours!
Seems a little better today although trying to reply to this thread, timeout again...
