A BT80 is not the master socket, it's a small junction box:

Something is not quite right? The customer demarcation point is normally the master socket and the cabling up to that point is part of the OpenReach responsibility. Of course in many older installations the 'historical' older wiring has been 're-purposed' without proper checking? I believe that it should be an OpenReach responsibility to regularise such installations to establish a compliant customer demarcation point.

It does seem odd ... and the 80 is a dropline to internal cabling junction box.... which would suggest its a BTOR installed item.

Yes, but in this case, it's alleged to have corroded due to damp, which if true would make it your fault, a bit like if you were digging in your garden and stuck a spade through the cable in the ground.
In my own experience, no visiting Openreach engineer ever fitted a modern master socket, we've only ever had them out for telephone faults, but they always mostly worked in the BT66 box on an outside wall, leaving all the star-wired sockets as-is.
Anyway, the question is where is this BT80, if there even is one, and how could it have got damp or corroded? If it's where the cable comes in from outside, and got damp from the outside, then perhaps Openreach didn't do something outside properly in the first place.

Really? I got a new 5C master socket installed quite recently - along with a MK4 VDSL plate - and that was for a broadband fault

Yes really. All those visits pre-dated the NTE5C which I believe they now have a policy of always installing on any visit (because it'll be required for future SOGEA services, when they eventually start selling FTTC broadband without a telephone service).

It seems to be a bit of a debatable item according to this BT document In the earlier text and diagrams (Section 2) the BT block terminal is clearly identified as a BTOR responsibility. But see the caveat in 2.1?
Now check Sections 3 and 4. Confusing and unclear?
I'd challenge the charge and request some justification as to why.
